This week, the big news story here in the United States has been the Democratic National Convention. Yesterday, Joe Biden officially became the Democratic nominee.
Earlier this year, Bernie Sanders had all of the momentum. He was winning state after state, and it looked like the Democrats were finally returning to their working class roots. Perhaps a real progressive might actually have a chance to win the White House, and bring about some refreshing change into Washington.

Then, the Washington establishment panicked and worked behind the scenes to make sure that such a scenario did not take place.
Just days before Super Tuesday, several Democrats pulled out of the race, and all of them gave their endorsements to Joe Biden, who suddenly emerged the big winner on Super Tuesday. It was enough to make him the heavy favorite to become the Democratic nominee almost overnight.
Many mainstream Democrats rejoiced. I remember some were acting like the Democrats had somehow dodged a bullet, by once again nominating the one candidate who, more than any other, would be likely to be vulnerable to losing the general election. They seemed to believe that he was the only one who could possibly win, even though again, just like in 2016, the polls suggested something very different.
We have learned since then that former President Obama may have played a large part in pressuring those other candidates to drop out, and give the nod to Biden. If this is true – and there is evidence to suggest that it is indeed true – then Obama played a very large role in making sure that Bernie Sanders would not get the nomination, and that any chance of an actual progressive platform for the Democrats would essentially be denied.
Now, we have a report that suggests that, at least in private, the former president believes that Biden might actually screw things up in this election. He was caught telling another Democrat not to underestimate the chances that Joe Biden might, in his words, fuck everything up and lose to Trump.
So indeed, it seems that the establishment Democrat Obama, who once won the presidency on the promise of “hope” and “change” and seemed to be a true reform candidate and a turn to progressivism for the country, but who instead turned very much into a disappointingly conservative, “politics as usual” President once in the White House, once again showed that mainstream Democrats feel more emboldened to take serious action to stop Bernie Sanders rather than Donald Trump. This reveals that they in reality view Bernie Sanders as the bigger threat than Trump to their power and privileges.
Imagine that.
