Today we are visiting the Buffalo and hopefully Rochester regions of western New York state.
One of the main places that we wanted to visit were the Buffalo Botanical Gardens, which are actually in nearby Orchard Park, New York.
Visiting gardens is always one of the best, coolest things to do when visiting a place, and these botanical gardens had some impressive aspects that made it unique. The centerpiece of it would be the tri-dome design of the glasshouse, which is one of only a dozen large Victorian conservatories in the United States, according to the Wikipedia page.
Indeed, it is a beautiful place. The outside garden is very nice, albeit small. Still, the floral arrangements which surround the glass building, with the glass domes serving as a backdrop, make this indeed quite beautiful.
Also, we passed a big, huge church on our way to the botanical gardens. This was so impressive, it made me slow down and look while driving, and it earned me the clear disdain of one driver in a hurry to wherever he was going to. I promised myself to stop and take a closer look on the way back. But in fact, this church was close enough to the Buffalo Botanical Gardens to be within easy walking distance, just a couple of blocks, really.
This wound up being the Our Lady of Victory National Shrine and Basilica. This was a very beautiful church, which we saw first from a distance, but which looked spectacular, almost like it belonged in Europe. It has domes and two tower, and is adorned with statues and columns outside. Indeed, this looked very picturesque, and I felt a need to take some pictures. The close proximity of the basilica and the botanical gardens makes a visit to this town particularly enchanting and memorable, especially given the often dire reputation of the Buffalo region. In fact, we found that Buffalo and it's surrounding area had some really nice places worth visiting. This was one of them.
