There still are not many details regarding the horrific incident in Waukesha, Wisconsinn on Sunday. During a Christmas parade, a red SUV sped through the parade and simply plowed through the crowd of people. Last I heard, five people were killed and 40 injured.
It is not believed to be related to the Kyle Rittenhouse verdict from nearby Kinosha, Wisconsin. However, the timing seemed unusual, at least at first, given the significance of the reaction from that verdict, and the proximity to Kinosha.
I heard about it only late last night at work, having been asleep during the hours in between my two jobs. It was stunning news, of course, and reminded me of similar instances where vehicles purposefully killed and injured many by plowing through crowds of people. It happened a year or two ago in Manhattan, and of course, it also happened in 2015, I believe, in Nice, France.
On my end, there is not much to say, other than that my heart goes out to those who were hurt and killed, as well as to their families. These are the types of incidents that make this world feel like a very scary and unkind place.
Yet, if there is a silver lining here, it is that the horrible instance of entirely unnecessary pain and terror on the one hand also was followed by people showing the best of themselves and their nature. There were people who could be seen running towards the chaotic scene, trying to help those in obvious need.
