Lisbon Visit # 6: Mosteiro des Jeromimas

This was the first building which I saw up close in Lisbon that really made me kind of stop and take notice.

Up to this point, it had actually felt a little bit disappointing. Many of the neighborhoods that I saw were of apartment buildings probably dating back to the Sixties and Seventies. They were mostly uninteresting and tacky, frankly.  And they appeared to be everywhere.

Then suddenly, we were near Belem, and it was a completely different experience. This neighborhood had old architecture. It was aesthetically pleasant. Now, this had to be the real Lisbon. This felt like a truly European city.

And this building stood out as one of the real highlights. I had not encountered it when researching alternatives for a 24-hour itinerary to visit Lisbon.

It should have been, however. This was the real deal. An architectural and historical gem. The reason why people visit charming old European cities like this.

I was impressed.

Of course, I took some pictures.

Here they are. Enjoy.
