⚽️ ⚽️ PSG Suffers Another Surprising Defeat ⚽️ ⚽️

The Parisians suffered another surprising loss at the Parc des Princes yesterday, losing to FC Nantes, 2-1.

This was a surprising result, given that Nantes came in as a lowly team, and PSG dominated the game in certain statistics. They possessed the ball for nearly three-quarters of the game, and completed 719 passes, to just 249 for Nantes.

Still, on this day, the end result did not reflect how much better PSG played, and how much of a better team they seem to be by all accounts. On this day, at least, Nantes pulled off a rather shocking surprise upset.

So, how did that happen?

Julian Drexler broke through in the 42nd minute, giving the home team the early, and rather predictable, lead. They took that into the lockers for halftime.

In the second half, however, Nantes came out more aggressively, and they came out to win, which they ultimately did.

Randal Kolo was able to tie the game for the Canaries in the 59th minute after a defensive lapse by a lethargic PSG side, which has struggled in recent home games.

Then, it was Moses Simon who took a deep pass from Nantes goalkeeper Alban Lafont  with little resistance from PSG’s defense. Simon then easily managed to beat PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas in the 71st minute, and Nantes suddenly had a rather stunning upset victory on the road.

The win by Nantes was the first in Paris in 18 years. Nantes has suffered through a very difficult season, and were – and in fact still are – facing the very real possibility of relegation. They have earned just 27 points in 29 games played, although this win jumps them to 18th in the standings of 20 teams.

As for PSG, they continue to struggle this season, especially at home lately. They are tied with Lyon for second place in the Ligue 1 standings, both with 60 points earned in 29 games played, although it should be noted that PSG do have the tiebreaker advantage over Lyon because of goal differential. However, both teams trail the leaders, Lille, who sit atop the standings right now with 63 points in 29 games.

One strange bit of news was that Argentinian Ángel Di María was pulled from the game and replaced by Leandro Paredes just after the 60 minute mark, as Di María was informed that his home had been robbed during the game.

  1. Yes, it's been a frustrating Ligue 1 season for PSG. They missed a golden opportunity to retake the lead in the standings, since the other three teams in the hunt for the title - Lille, Lyon and Monaco - all failed to win.

All will be forgiven if they eventually win the Champions League (they just won the return leg against Barcelona at the Parc des Princes - a lackluster 1-1 draw was enough in light of their impressive 4-1 in in Catalonia). If on the other hand they ultimately fall short of the mark again and fail to even win Ligue 1, it would be hard to spin this season as a success.
