Canadian Football League Update: Division Finals Today Will Determine Grey Cup Teams

Grey Cup/Coupe Grey

The Grey Cup is one of Canada's biggest single sporting events every year. It is the equivalent of the Super Bowl for the Canadian Football League (CFL). It usually features a lot of pomp, with big name entertainers and performers on display, and a huge audience tuning in, particularly in Canada, although some recent Grey Cups have been broadcast here in the United States, as well.

Later today, the CFL Division Finals will be played. The winners of these two games will advance to the Grey Cup next Sunday to determine who will be this year's CFL champions.

The first Division Final will have the Toronto Argonauts hosting the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, in what is a fairly local rivalry between two of the three Ontario teams in the league.

The second Division Final will see the Saskatchewan Roughriders traveling to Manitoba to take on the Winning Blue Bombers. Winnipeg are the most recent team to have won the Grey Cup, although somewhat paradoxically, they also are not exactly the defending champions, at least not in the traditional sense. They won it in 2019, but the 2020 season was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, so they did not have a chance to defend their title last year.

A few years ago, I was covering the CFL more or less weekly, but I was able to watch those games fairly regularly back then. This year, that is not the case, so my picks will be questionable, at best. However, for what it is worth, here they are. I expect the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to win and advance in their game, and for Toronto to advance and meet Winnipeg in the Grey Cup.

My pick: Toronto  Defeats Hamilton and Winnipeg Defeats Saskatchewan
