⚽️ ⚽️ MLS Cup Final: New York FC Edges Portland in Penalty Shootout & Wins First Championship in Franchise History ⚽️ ⚽️

On Saturday, New York City FC played the Portland Timbers in the MLS Cup Final in Portland, Oregon. It proved to be a hard-fought, close game. It looked like New York FC had the game won until late in extra time, very near the end of the game, when the Timbers managed to tie it up. Still in the end, New York FC were able to triumph, winning 4-2 in the penalties to earn the team's first MLS championship in franchise history.

The scoring - what little of it there was for both teams prior to the penalty shootout - started with Valentín Castellanos breaking through in the 41st minute, drawing first blood. It gave New York FC the 1-0 lead, which they took into the locker room for halftime.

They held onto that lead throughout the second half, and looked ready to celebrate, until Felipe Mora scored at 90+4. A very dramatic answer that could easily have dispirited New York FC.

However, as already mentioned, this game went to the penalty shootout, and the Pigeons of New York FC were able to emerge triumphant. They are the newly crowned champions of the MLS, winning in their first and so far only MLS Cup Final appearance.
