Grey Cup/Coupe Grey
The Grey Cup is one of Canada's biggest single sporting events every year. It is the equivalent of the Super Bowl for the Canadian Football League (CFL). It usually features a lot of pomp, with big name entertainers and performers on display, and a huge audience tuning in, particularly in Canada, although some recent Grey Cups have been broadcast here in the United States, as well.
Yesterday, the two teams that will participate in this year's Grey Cup were determined in the two CFL Division Finals.
The first Division Final saw the Hamilton Tiger-Cats upset the hometown Toronto Argonauts, 27-19. Hamilton had been getting shut out through the first half, but put together a tremendous second half, holding Toronto to just 1 point in the third quarter and 6 points in the fourth quarter, while they scored 27 points total in the second half, sending the Argonauts home disappointed.
The Tiger-Cats will now advance to the Grey Cup, where they will take on the winners of the second Division Final, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Winnipeg won the most recent Grey Cup back in 2019, defeating these same Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Blue Bombers set up this rematch by coming back to defeat the Saskatchewan Roughriders, 21-17.
This year's Grey Cup - the 108th edition of the classic CFL championship - will be played at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton, which means that the Tiger-Cats have de facto home field advantage. Winnipeg goes into this game as the favorites, having enjoyed a very successful 11-3 season, which qualified as the best overall record in the league, and easily enough for them to win the West Division. Meanwhile, Hamilton finished the season 8-6, but managed to pull off the huge road upset in Toronto to qualify for this Grey Cup rematch against the Blue Bombers, who look to win a second straight Grey Cup title.
My pick: Winnipeg Defeats Hamilton
