When you think of UFO's in modern America, there is a good chance that you might think about that guy on the History Channel with his distinctive weird hair. Often times, we are led to think that UFO's are the domain of quacks and conspiracy theorists.
Yet, the thought of alien life somewhere out there is hardly crazy thinking. Personally, I believe that it is the height of arrogance to think that we humans are the best and most intelligent life out there in the entire universe. Not only is that thought depressing, but it also feels very narrow in scope, and not open to very real possibilities.
That said, there are some real legitimate reasons to doubt the idea of aliens visiting us here on Earth. It seems to me that the people who see and experience UFO's do so fairly frequently, and are often too easily convinced of their presence. So far, to my knowledge, there is no solid proof. The same could be said of ghosts and angels and literal interpretations of religion and religious history.
However, I want to keep an open mind about this, because there is a lack of certainty either way. There is no specific, concrete, irrefutable evidence that we have been visited by aliens, it is true. But it also has not really been disproved, either.
Recently, Michio Kaku suggested that scientists would do well to take the UFO phenomenon seriously. He has a brilliant mind, and I am inclined to agree with him, even if popular perceptions and famous stories regarding UFO's often lack that same credibility that I was just mentioning.
In any case, below is a link to an article about this topic. If you are interested in this, it might be something to check out:
