RIP, Sidney Poitier

One of the most iconic actors of the 20th century, Sidney Poitier, has died.

Poitier was an actor of considerable acclaim. He was the first black actor to win an Oscar and an Academy Award. Many people considered Poitier to have transformed how black people could be portrayed as major actors, including in lead roles. Before him, black actors were often restricted to literally subservient roles, but Poitier helped to change that.

On many levels, he can be seen as a pioneer of his field, and he transformed his profession on many levels. His rise to success came at a time when the nation itself was going through some serious soul searching, as the civil rights movement helped to end legalized racial segregation and helped pave the way for major breakthroughs for blacks in many fields.

Poitier died at the age of 94.

RIP, Sidney Poitier.
