The Dave Matthews Band is interesting, albeit occupying kind of a strange legacy. They are regarded by some as musical geniuses, by others as annoying and tantamount to slightly more interesting than average pop music. They came out in the nineties, yet they really could have come out at any time period and stood out,, because they are not really define by the time period which they came out of. After all, they were radically different than the musical genres - grunge, post-grunge, Nu metal, hip-hop - which dominated that decade.
In short, the DMB are just different. Admittedly, I was not exactly thrilled when they experienced their initial, meteoric rise to enormous popularity. It was radically different than the music that I liked best, which at the time was fast and hard and loud and aggressive. Yet, I admittedly also liked quite a few of their songs. Almost despite myself, I came to identify as a fan.
Over the years, I've seen them - and Dave Matthews in particular - in concert numerous times. He always struck me as a decent and interesting guy, with a very good sense of humor. Also, obviously, a very talented musician.
Well some years ago, he discussed the suicide of Chris Cornell. And he admitted that he himself had contemplated suicide at times, but had some decent people around him who helped him steer away from that. He also discusses Cornell a bit. It's an interesting conversation, and it seemed worth sharing the link below:
