The Beatles were ahead of their time. They first became popular by playing standards. Indeed, some people have speculated that, at first, the Beatles were little more than what we would describe these days as a boy band.
Yet, they changed. Greatly changed. They experimented with different sounds, including guitar distortion and Indian instruments and sounds. In many respects, the Fab Four were, in fact, not just ahead of the curve, but decades ahead of their time. I suspect that is why their music still resonates as strongly as it does, decades after they ceased to be a band.
