Another Horrific Mass Shooting at a California Bar

Less than two weeks since the last horrifying mass shooting, where 11 people were killed in Pittsburgh at a synagogue, there was another mass shooting last night at a bar in Thousand Oaks in Ventura County, California, about forty miles northwest of Los Angeles. Wednesday was college night at the bar, so there were a lot of college aged kids present, although it is not known whether the presence of college kids was a factor or not.

At least 13 people are reported dead, and the sheriff, who just finished a press conference on television that I saw, said that the scene inside was a nightmare, with a lot of bodies and blood.

Not much is known about the shooter at this point, or what his motivations might be. But it is known that he is dead. He burst into the scene at around 11:20 pm local time, wearing a trench coat, possibly after setting off smoke bombs, and then started shooting with what some at the scene described as a pistol, or a handgun.

Once the shooting began, people did everything they could to escape, form throwing tables and furniture out windows t provide some escape route, to hiding in bathrooms and attics, according to a Los Angeles Times article (please see link below).

More details will surely emerge in the coming hours and days.

It seems that we have to grieve for those killed during such horrible mass shootings, which just seem to keep occurring with regularity in this country, and nowhere else. Once again, I feel we have to look at ourselves in this country, and look at what is going on, with the undeniable rise of hatred and violent incidents. I do not know what sparked this particular incident, and few do just yet at this point. However, there are just far too many violent incidents like this that we have seen in recent years.

My heart goes out to the victims and their families.
