Sad news to report, as Stephen Hillenburg, who created the "SpongeBob SquarePants" television show and characters, died. He was 57 years old.
My son grew up on SpongeBob, and was a huge fan not too long ago. I saw SpongeBob was popular among many kids in schools, and has remained popular to this day, outlasting the usual fads that kids get into and out of quickly. SpongeBob had some lasting power, probably because it offered quite a bit more than many other kinds of programming, and could even be quite entertaining for adults, with some inside jokes and references that seemed meant for adults.
Hillenburg created something that was very meaningful for children for many years, as well as, by extension, their parents. As a parent myself, I know this to be true.
RIP, Stephen Hillenburg.
