New York Millennial Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Cannot Afford to Move to Washington Before Taking Office

I actually ran across this article almost by accident, via a judgmental former high school classmate of mine, clearly sarcastically suggesting that this was an example of fine Puerto Rican financial responsibility.

There are a few problems that I had with that little snide comment. Aside from sounding racist, it does not take into account America's own role in taking over that island and exploiting it, rendering much of the soil useless because of sugarcane.

Secondly, it reinforces the American privilege and conceit that success is only measured by financial success, by having a lot of money.

Which leads me to the third point, which is that it felt refreshing to me to hear this, because this means this is truly a politician that I personally feel can relate to, being too broke to make a move like this. This suggests that she understands the struggles that people are going through, and might bring some real understanding to Washington on that score, hopefully.

It also suggests that she has not been corrupted (certainly, at least not yet).

So, while this guy looked at it in a derisive manner, I actually viewed it as refreshing, and a sign that Washington politicians do not automatically have to be wealthy and corrupt and out of touch with the struggles of everyday Americans.
