How pathetic can you be? How shallow and transparently egotistical can one man be?
Well, in this, Trump is definitely winning, because he has set all sorts of records - some might suggest lows - in promoting himself, like the shameless opportunist and con man that he is, and always has been.
It might seem like all of this is a joke. In fact, in some respects, it sure feels like a joke. A bad one, and at the expense of America. For all of the world to see.
Indeed, the meaning of Thanksgiving might be controversial, especially the historical ties to some shared feast and a spirit of love and cooperation between the pilgrims and Native Americans, who definitely do not usually share in the spirit of this particular holiday, and instead, often remind us of the genocide of their people and their culture which followed.
But one way or the other, when most of us express what we are thankful for, we try to keep in mind a more mature, more selfless attitude, one in which we express gratitude for all that we have been blessed with. The idea is that it is supposed to appeal to our better nature, and to attaining greater wisdom. To value those things, and those people, that truly matter in our lives. Expressing our thanks for all of life's blessings is supposed to be when we put ourselves, and our petty interests and distractions, aside.
Right now, we have someone in the Oval Office who is the antithesis of all of that. Here is a man with a truly legendary ego, a megalomaniac who not only does not lift a finger to try and hide his shallow side, but indeed, makes a point of advertising it. How relentless, this scam artist's selfishness and narcissism. Just when you think he cannot possibly surprise us with an ever greater showing of it, he manages to do so, and lowers the bar of his own ridiculous conduct.
Is it not amazing that the one area where Trump never lies, and always managed to tell the truth, is when he is expressing his own love for himself? This man lies like no other public figure that any of us have ever seen, yet when it comes to expressing just how great he thinks he is, he always, always goes overboard with telling us at every opportunity just how great he is. And now, it has reached such levels of absurdity, that on the very day when you are supposed to give thanks for all that you have been blessed with in life, Trump saw it fitting that he should express how thankful he is for...himself.
Here is how he responded when asked by a reporter what he was thankful for on this Thanksgiving:
“For having a great family and for having made a tremendous difference in this country. I made a tremendous difference in the country. This country is so much stronger now than it was when I took office that you won’t believe it.
“And I mean, you see it, but so much stronger that people can’t even believe it. When I see foreign leaders, they say we cannot believe the difference in strength between the United States now and the United States two years ago. Made a lot of progress.”
Donald Trump is as deep as a wad of spit.
He is right about one thing, though. When he said that the country was so much stronger now under him, that we would not believe it, he was spot on. I don't believe it. Neither do a majority of Americans. And apparently, the United Nations did not buy it, either, as evidenced by that moment when this joke of a president touted his own horn before those assembled at the United Nations, and was literally laughed at for the entire world to see.
