Movie Review: Spinal Tap II: The End Continues

Having heard about this sequel for months now, it was definitely a movie which I wanted to check out. However, I had to wait until after the recent trip. Then had to wait until this past weekend, where my work schedule was just way too busy to allow an opportunity to go see this movie.

Once this week began and my schedule freed up, however, I found myself going to the move theater for the first time in a long time. The last time that I went to the theaters to see a new movie would have been over two years ago, for Indiana Jones. Yesterday, I went and saw The Long Walk, which I intend to review later on.

Earlier today, however, I saw Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.

So how was it?

Well, it was good. In keeping with the humor of the first movie. Definitely got some decent laughs along the way, which is of course the point.

Now that said, it felt like it started off a little bit slowly. There was one funny part about a shop selling cheese and guitars, but it otherwise felt like it took a while for this to begin to be really funny.

Yet, it got there. The more the movie went along, the funnier it got. In fact, the moment that made me laugh the most - I still am laughing now thinking about it many hours after the movie ended - came almost right at the end, as the band began to play one of their most iconic songs. It was apparently a small thing, something that not everybody caught, because I was the only one who reacted or was laughing in the theater. But I could not stop laughing from that point onwards, even though the movie itself was still a few minutes away from being over.

There are plenty of famous musical guests who make appearances. The one I knew about was Sir Paul McCartney, but there are plenty of others, as well. One of them winds up being a fairly prominent part of the concert that ends the movie, playing the song which has something funny happy right at the beginning. Apparently, you have to listen closely, because again, I'm not sure that everyone - or even anyone else in the theater - heard it. Don't want to give anything away, just in case there are any fans of the movie reading this and intend to go see the movie, but have not seen it yet. No spoilers here, if I can help it. But I got a very good laugh from it, even if I happened to be all alone in my laughter.

Not surprisingly, there are other famous musicians, particularly when they are searching for a new drummer.

Otherwise, there are some guest appearances by fictional characters who were in the first movie, as well.

A funny movie and a solid follow-up to the first Spinal Tap movie. It feels like a solid way to close out their story (assuming that there will be no other Spinal Tap movies after this one).

Highly recommended for any fans of Spinal Tap.
