Stephen King's House in Bangor, Maine
Yes, today is the 78th birthday of Stephen King. He hardly needs an introduction, since he is one of the most prolific authors around.
Of course, I am a big fan of King's writing. It's strange, because I am not even really that huge of a fan of horror. I mean, yes, a good scary movie or novel can be quite enjoyable sometimes. But that hardly means that it is my favorite genre, or that I follow all authors of the genre.
Yet, King is different. The thing I most appreciate about his writing is that his characters feel almost real, even when they are thrust in often unrealistic or over the top kinds of situations. But those characters of his are often believable and enjoyable to read. So enjoyable that I almost view them as taking a miniature vacation from myself.
I first became a fan of King through a friend of mine, who started to read and collect King's works shortly before I did. He pointed out one book, "Needful Things," which he suggested was relatively rare. So I picked it up, liked the cover, and decided to give it a shot. Started reading it shortly after that night, and was hooked.
Have been a fan of Stephen King ever since. His writing style is just amazing to me. Some writers require real effort to read. With King, it feels like a break from your ordinary day-to-day routine. A welcome distraction, if you will. Also, it makes me feel like perhaps I can write like that someday. He makes it look and feel effortless.
Now, it has been nearly thirty years since I first started reading Stephen King's works. Enough time to have read almost every book (all but one officially released book, and maybe a few unpublished works). Clearly, I have grown quite familiar with his body of work. Perhaps the greatest compliment, then, that I can offer is that I still am a Constant Reader, and eagerly look forward to each new book which he releases, usually at least once a year, sometimes more.
So today, it seemed fitting to honor King on his 78th birthday.
