We had been thinking about taking our seemingly annual trip to the beach one of these Fridays, which is our mutual day off.
Indeed, we did it earlier today.
Once again, we opted for our now usual destination of Asbury Park. For several years, it used to be Sandy Hook which we would go to. But she had wanted a change some years ago, and so I thought she might like Asbury Park better. After all, it had things which she might like better, including a boardwalk and some restaurants and other places of business, where we might get refreshments.
Ever since, this has been our regular place when we visit the Jersey Shore.
It was not nearly as crowded as in some other visits today. But then we found out why once we actually went to the beach.
Usually, I relax on the beach for a bit. Maybe we have some snacks, and maybe I read for a bit.
This time, however, I went right for the water. Figured it would be best to do that and try and use the rest of the time to relax and dry off. The water was a little cold at first, but it wound up being one of the easiest times that I can remember having adjusting to the temperature of the water for swimming. It was a little surprising, since the temperatures at night (and even during the daytime) have been unseasonably cool. Thought the water might also be cooler than normal, but that ended up not being the case.
Once I returned, I laid on the towel and relaxed. Or at least tried to, anyway. But the winds were unusually strong. Stronger than I had ever seen them on any prior trip to the beach. The sands kept flying, like a miniature sandstorm. Threatening to get in my eyes, I turned my back, only to then feel the back of my head getting sandblasted instead. My girlfriend was getting pelted, too.
That was pretty much it. We had simply had enough and wrapped things up. Decided enough was enough, and went to the boardwalk, where at least we would not be pelted with the grains of sand, and where the wind was not so strong (there are buildings protecting from the otherwise unfiltered winds. You might not expect for there to be that much of a difference in such a short distance. Yet, it was far more comfortable on the boardwalk.
We did not stay for very long. I changed out of my wet bathing suit and into a clean and dry outfit. But the prices were expensive for grabbing a bite to eat. We relaxed for a short while, watching the ocean and reading. However, once it came close to our parking time expiring, we both decided to go ahead and take off, instead of putting more in the machine to extend our time.
Nonetheless, I was glad that we at least made it once to the Jersey Shore. It has become tradition, and a rather nice one.
Below are some pictures from our admittedly unusual day at the beach.
Enjoy.
