The Factory of Sadness
After the latest debacle for the Cleveland Browns (and this one is apt to be remembered for a long time to come), I heard some analyst or other mention "The Factory of Sadness" stadium that the Browns play in.
For whatever the reason, I decided to check for this on Facebook, and was glad that I did, as it turned out.
The site is filled with fans of the Cleveland Browns, and they at least have a sense of humor about the general suckiness of their football team. There was one picture that showed the Browns helmet with the makeshift logo of Charlie Brown tripping and missing the football. Another showed an either injured or dispirited Browns quarterback lying flat on his back, and above it read "Bye Week 24, Browns 21." There was one picture that at first seemed to be the logo for the movie Straight Outta Compton, only this read "STRAIGHT OUTTA HOPE." There was another with the child actor Macauly Caulkin being questioned in court. The judge asked if he wanted to stay with hid day, and he says no, because he beats me. He says the same thing about his mom. When asked who he does want to stay with by an exasperated judge, the kid says the Cleveland Browns, because (drum roll, please)....they don't beat anyone!
One fan put up a blog post of The Factory of Sadness, and after the Browns lost on a Thursday, he posted that the good news was that there was no chance of the Browns losing on Sunday, since they already had accomplished that earlier in the week.
Another fan (Owen McGinty) had this to say about The Factory of Sadness following the unbelievable ending to the MNF game at Cleveland a couple of nights ago: It lives up to its name, producing an abundance of new and unique sadness every football season.
Indeed, at least Browns fans have fun with their team, and the decided lack of success that they have had to endure now for so many years.
There were selfies with various stunned and angry faces of fans, and one stood out, because it was a picture of a nice and happy looking couple. Underneath, however, it read "Happy, for now..." Whether they were referring to the luck of the Browns, or of their future together, was a little less clear.
Another individual likened being a fan of the Browns to a heartbreaking relationship with a woman. He claimed that he had divorced her (the Browns), and was now considering asking out her best friend (the Pittsburgh Steelers).
Brutal.
I, for one, will give Browns fans a lot of respect, and points for having probably the best sense of humor of any sports fans that I know of, and also for staying loyal and passionate towards their team, despite a lack of anything positive that they get back.
Also, I truly do hope that the Browns, and especially their fans, will hopefully soon have something to cheer about on the football field. It would be really nice to see the Browns in the playoffs again and, dare I say, possibly the Super Bowl someday!
What Actually Happens When You Crack Your Knuckles
Cracking my knuckles is a bad habit that I have had now for decades. Unfortunately, it is something that my son seems to have picked up from me, for which I feel bad about.
So, I have been trying to get out of that bad habit for some time, and encouraging him to do the same. Having run into this article, I intend to show this to him, and will hope that it makes an impact.
We shall see how that goes.
In any case, if anyone out there has the same problem, or was simply wondering what effect cracking knuckles has on your health, here is a link to an article that should help to bring clarity on that point:

How well do you remember Roman history from your old school days?
Well, the other day, I got to listen to the first part of a radio program on NPR (Fresh Air with Terry Gross), when a truly fascinating topic came up. I work overnights, and had been busy earlier during the day, only getting maybe a couple of hours of sleep, and desperately needing more sleep. I listened for a while, although once I reached home from running errands, I had to hesitantly turn it off after only maybe ten minutes of discussion on Ancient Rome.
However, I promised myself that I would find the time to listen to the program again, and that opportunity came the very next day. Yesterday, actually. I had to shave my face and head (long overdue, actually), and decided it would be a good idea to listen to this program while so doing. Indeed, it was a fascinating discussion with a scholar about Ancient Rome, allowing the listener to gain greater clarity on what really happened in those days. What were Julius Caesar's last words (here's a hint: Shakespeare did not get it exactly right with his "Et tu, Brute?")? What was it like for women in Rome? Were there really gladiator fights like those depicted in movies and television shows?

The Two Enemies of the People

"The two enemies of the people are criminals and government, so let us tie the second down with the chains of the Constitution so the second will not become the legalized version of the first."
~Thomas Jefferson
I saw this quote earlier on Facebook. It was posted by a guy that I knew from high school who himself is a politician (local). And it got me to thinking. Ultimately, I decided to comment on it. Here is what I posted:
Not sure I agree with this. I think any institutions created by humans - be they governments, churches, or corporations - are susceptible to corruption. So, they can potentially all be enemies of the people. However, governments are (or can be), as Lincoln decreed, of the people, by the people, and for the people. When government is done right, meaning elected and controlled by an informed citizenry, it can be a force for good. But you would never know that by how much skepticism and even hatred is heaped on it whenever people speak of governments as always the problem, and never the solution. Hopefully, that level of skepticism will lessen, because my suspicion is that it has become part of this country's problem now.
I will say that I believe the evil in government right now is that too many members of the government are bought and sold by special (corporate) interests, which to me, constitutes a conflict of interest. There should be a strict separation of corporation and state, or we will always be plagued by invasive and totalitarian government.
In this day and age, not to acknowledge the dangers of corporate control over people's lives is tantamount to willful ignorance. I have often felt that the excessive skepticism towards government, which has been strongly entrenched since Reagan took office, and the related focus on deregulation is essentially code for taking away power from an elected "government of the people, by the people, and for the people" in order to give more power to corporations that are not elected and hardly ever pretend to serve the people. For corporations, the bottom line is profits, and increasingly, the focus is on short term profits. That has led to consistent news of layoffs, benefits and/or salaries compromised and cut, and environmental regulations for polluting corporations essentially rendered ineffective.
That is what the dominance of corporate supremacy has given us for the last two decades in particular, and it has been to the detriment of the entire nation, and possibly even to the entire world, since this diseased focus on accommodating corporations at all costs has taken hold overseas too often, as well.
So, until self-described conservatives truly start to show that they understand the dangers of giving in to corporations, and that demonizing government tends to be self-defeating in the long run, then I cannot fully agree with this generally powerful Jefferson quote.

Yet, that is indeed what they are doing, racing out to a record 19-0 start. They are the first team in NBA history, and indeed in the history of major North American sports, to have gotten off to such a long undefeated start.
Very impressive, and I have written an article about it in the Guardian Liberty Voice (my first in over a month, admittedly) that I hope you will check out by clicking on the link below:

Brady Gets Bested by Denver - Twice!
A lot of people do not like Tom Brady and the Patriots, and at times, it was a mystery to me why this was so. A few years ago, there was a poll of the least liked quarterbacks in the league, and Brady headed the list, even ahead of Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger, who has a history with rape, and generally just acting like a despicable human being, which I found, frankly, stupid. Whatever problems people may have with Brady, hating him more than someone like that was just, well, a bit over the top.
It seems that the Patriots are the new Dallas Cowboys. They simply generate a hatred just by their mere mention, just by stepping on the field. Hell, just by existing, it seems. And they are far more relevant than the actual Dallas Cowboys these days are, continually qualifying for the Super Bowl like those Dallas Cowboys of old. So, in a sense, I guess the resentment was understandable, even if the claims that they continually cheat are, frankly, overblown, and the equivalent of comfort food for people who cannot accept that the Pats actually are good enough to keep going to and keep winning Super Bowls.
Still, that did not justify people hating Tom Brady specifically, it seemed. I mean, I cannot stand the 49ers, but I sure liked Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, and Bill Walsh. Respect their accomplishments, even if you are not happy about them, and even if you do not like the teams that they play for, you can like the individual.
Well, I think I can begin to understand a little bit more now why some people just do not like Tom Brady. Heading into this weekend, when the Pats would visit Mile High to take on the Broncos, Brady posted a pic of himself bucking a Broncos logo, which was kind of obnoxious.
However, Denver got the last laugh, not just by winning and handing New England their first (and so far only) loss, but also by posting another pic of Brady, this time lying on his back and looking injured. It was pretty funny, and the perfect response to Brady's post.

NFL 2015-16 Week 13 Preview & MNF Review of Browns-Ravens
It is not often that you get the kind of ending to a game that we got last night on Monday Night Football between the Ravens and the Browns.
There were the Browns, seemingly about to win a tied game on the final play, which was an admittedly long field goal attempt.
No big deal, though, right? What's the worst that could possibly happen? They miss the field goal and it goes into overtime, surely.
Nope. The Browns have found new and innovative ways of losing in recent years, and they were at it again last night. We found out that, in fact, the worst thing that could possibly happen on a potentially game winning field goal attempt in the game's final play is to get that attempt blocked, then have a defender catch it and run it all the way back for a game winning touchdown.
Only in Cleveland.
This one is going to be remembered. Such a strange ending.
Let's look at the upcoming match-ups for this coming weekend:
(TNF) Green Bay at Detroit - Two teams heading in opposite directions. No, the Lions cannot realistically hope to make a playoff push, being so far behind. However, they can achieve a surprising season sweep of the Packers with a win here, although the Packers seem to have a tendency to play their best when their backs are against the wall. A very hard game to pick, but I will say Green Bay triumphs in the end.
NY Jets at NY Giants - Battle of the New York teams. Both of these teams have been hovering around 500 all season long. The Jets got a big win against Miami, while the Giants suffered a tough loss at Washington. Technically, this is a Giants home game, although if there ever was a rivalry where that truly does not matter, this would be the one. The Giants are more desperate right now, absolutely needing a win to keep up with Washington, which gives them advantage. In a tough match-up that is almost too close to call, that might just be enough. So my prediction is for Big Blue to prevail.
Cincinnati at Cleveland - The Browns are going to be motivated to win, following their humiliating defeat on MNF. But Cincy's not the team that they will do it against, most likely. The Browns are fighting for their pride, but the Bengals are fighting for the division and playoff positioning. Cincy wins it with a steady performance.
Seattle at Minnesota - The Vikings are not as solid as Seattle, although they do have home field advantage. The Seahawks are still one of the best teams in the league, despite a record that indicates otherwise. They have not exactly blown away the competition this year, yet they are hanging in just enough to remain in playoff position, and they can be dangerous once they get there. They will prove that again this weekend with a road win against the Vikings.
Houston at Buffalo - Yet another game with pretty big playoff ramifications. The Bills are tough at home, although Houston is red hot. This is going to be a very close call, and weather may play a factor. It could go either way, although right now I am leaning more towards Houston pulling off a big road win. Then again, the Bills are a solid team, and are tough at home. Too close to call, really, but I'll still call it for the Texans on the road.
Atlanta at Tampa Bay - Despite Tamps Bay's disappointing loss last week at Indy, they are looking solid. In the meantime, the Falcons appear to be on the downward trajectory. It is hard to believe that they were 6-1 only four or so weeks ago. I suspect the Bucs will tie the Falcons for second place in the division following this contest.
San Francisco at Chicago - The Bears are still fighting, grasping for the playoff spot, however slim the chances may seem. They have home field advantage, and appear to be the better team in this match up. I will take the Bears in Chicago to beat the 49ers, who remain winless away from home.
Baltimore at Miami - The Ravens have finally won more than one game in a row this season, and have to be riding high after the big win in Cleveland. The Dolphins are probably at a low, after a sobering loss at the Jets. I suspect these teams are heading in opposite directions, and the Ravens should take it.
Arizona at St. Louis - The Cardinals suffered a key injury last week, although that will not stop them from beating the Rams, who seem to have simply given up on this season following a promising beginning. Road team or not, this game is Arizona's to lose.
Jacksonville at Tennessee - This is one of those games that can be easily overlooked. The Jaguars were fighting for something, bu the loss last weekend effectively ended their already slim playoff hopes. I figure the Titans are now overdue for a win.
Carolina at New Orleans - The Saints improved last weekend on defense, although they are not playing nearly well enough to challenge the Panthers. New Orleans failed to score a touchdown last weekend for the first time in a very long time, while Carolina is red hot. Look for the Panthers to move to 12-0, although the Saints will fight them in this one.
Philadelphia at New England - The Eagles are really reeling, while the Patriots barely lost their first (and so far only) game last week in the snow at Denver. New England is still a very tough place to play, so I figure the Eagles are ripe for a blowout loss here.
Kansas City at Oakland - This should be a good one. Both teams fighting for their playoff lives, as well as for second place within this division. The Raiders won a tough game on the road at Tennessee, yet the Chiefs are playing lights out right now. So, I will take Kansas City in this one.
Denver at San Diego - San Diego finally won a game, although the Broncos should prove much, much tougher in San Diego than the Jaguars were in Jacksonville. The Broncos defense will hold Rivers and Company in check, while the Broncos offense is strong enough to get the job done and inch this team closer to the inevitable AFC West title.
(SNF) Indianapolis at Pittsburgh - The Colts are fighting for their lives to stay with red-hot Houston. The Steelers, in the meantime, are doing everything possible to keep in the playoff race. This should be a good game. My suspicions are that the Steelers will benefit from home field advantage, yet something tells me that the Colts are going to produce something surprising here. I'll go wiht my gut and take the Colts in a game that could go either way.
(MNF) Dallas at Washington - The Cowboys are 0-7 without Romo as the starting quarterback. You have to wonder how much they have left in the tank in a season that has gone disastrously for them. In the meantime, Washington is hot, battling for first place, and enjoys home field advantage. That adds up to a relatively easy win for Washington.
