CFL Update for October 19, 2026

The CFL season is winding down. Teams are making a final push to try and qualify for the playoffs. Or, in Ottawa's case, to notch their first win of the season and eliminate the distinct possibility of going winless throughout the season.

Let's take a look at what happened on penultimate weekend of the 2026 regular season in the CFL:

Ottawa 40, Toronto 39 - The Redblacks will not finish 2026 without a win. They finally earned their first win of the season in the penultimate weekend of this CFL season. But it took to the final seconds, and a successful and ultra important extra point conversion in the final seconds in order for them to do it. Rookie Ottawa quarterback Bryson Barries threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Ayden Eberhardt with just six seconds left, and Toronto desperately trying to keep their 39-33 lead. The touchdown tied the game, and the successful extra point conversion sealed the win for Ottawa, ending their horrendous 0-16 start to the season, as they finally notch one win under their belts. It also ended their historical losing streak at 22, three shy of the modern CFL record. As for the Argos, they now have dropped two straight games and fall to 9-8 on the year.

Edmonton 35, Winnipeg 27 - The Elks are ending the season looking mighty impressive. They earned their third straight win by beating a Winnipeg team that absolutely needed this game to keep their flickering playoff hopes alive. Edmonton improves to 13-4 on the season, now tied again with Montreal for the best overall record in the league. The Blue Bombers, meanwhile, fall to 8-9, and in last place in the West Division. They need to win against the Lions in Vancouver this coming weekend, and then also need some serious help if they are to qualify for this postseason.

Calgary 32, BC Lions 13 - The Lions were the hottest team in the CFL entering this past weekend. But Calgary has been coming on as of late, rallying late in the season to get into position to make a serious run for the playoffs, at the very least. This likely was their most impressive win yet. They defeat the red-hot BC Lions, who fall to 10-7 on the season. More importantly, the Stampeders improve to 9-8 and fourth overall in the West Division. They also now would take a spot in the postseason, and control their own destiny heading into the final week of the regular season.

Saskatchewan 16, Montreal 12  - The Alouettes had already clinched the East Division and homefield advantage for the East Division Championship. So this game was not absolutely crucial to them, like it was for Saskatchewan. The Roughriders needed this win to keep their playoff hopes strong. And they earned the win, exacting a measure of revenge for the loss to the Alouettes last weekend. The win improves Saskatchewan's overall record to 9-8, and they are now third in the West Division. More importantly, they control their own destiny for the postseason. Montreal, meanwhile, falls to 13-4 on the year, as they now will end their season against Toronto in a possible playoff preview.
