In January, the Tampa Bay Bucs shocked almost everybody by blowing out the defending champion Chiefs to win the second Super Bowl in franchise history. The fact that they won was not so shocking. It was how they won it which proved shocking. The defense just absolutely dominated Kansas City’s infamously explosive and dangerous offense. And on offense, of course, a 43-year old quarterback widely considered the GOAT proved deadly accurate.
The Bucs took control of the game early and impossibly easily. While the Chiefs offense was known for pulling off comebacks – they had won the previous Super Bowl in part by becoming the first team in NFL history to overcome double digit leads in three consecutive playoff games, after all – the announcers mentioned just before halftime that this game felt different. Indeed it did, too. The Texans had taken an even more commanding 24-0 lead in the divisional round of the 2019-20 divisional round, but they were already trailing by halftime. The Titans went up by 10 as well, but it did not feel like they had the Chiefs anywhere near checkmate at any point in the game. And while the 49ers really did come close to having the Chiefs on the ropes and seemingly very near defeat, the Chiefs offense always seemed on the verge of coming alive. Also, their offense did not quite do enough to really put the game out of reach.
By contrast, Tampa Bay – the first team to play the Super Bowl on their home field, and thus also the first team in NFL history to win the Super Bowl on their home field – seemed to have the game well in hand on both offense and defense. The KC defense looked a bit overwhelmed, while the usually prolific Chiefs offense seemed both uncharacteristically inept with all of the dropped passes, as well as, frankly, bullied. Yes, I think Tampa Bay’s physicality truly got to the Chiefs, seemed to get into their heads.
In any case, the Buccaneers certainly earned the ring. You don’t have to like Tom Brady – many people do not, obviously – or even the Bucs (not sure why anyone would particularly have it in for a franchise that has not exactly overwhelmed with their achievements in the course of their history), but it was hard to deny that they made the seemingly emerging dynasty Chiefs look very pedestrian on Super Bowl Sunday.
Now, six months and change later, the Bucs are getting the rings that they worked so hard for. They are handsome, sharp. There had been a trend for Super Bowl rings to be white gold. Some teams had done this in the past, most notably the Raiders, but the Patriots began it again in the 21st century, and this began a trend. For quite a while, it seemed that most teams opted for the white gold look, even some where it seemed, in many respects, that yellow gold would make more sense. But like the Chiefs did the year before, the Bucs keep the more traditional, conventional goldish color.
Tom Brady claimed that this particular Super Bowl ring was the sharpest. He would know, having won as many as he did. That said, however, I personally do not agree. He got some really nice rings with the Patriots, particularly Super Bowl LI (the one that they earned after overcoming a 28-3 deficit) and Super Bowl XXXVIII (when they beat the Carolina Panthers). Those ones are really nice looking rings, and among my personal favorites. Some others that really stand out for me are the Broncos for 50, the Steelers for XL, the Bears for XX, the Steelers again for XIII and X, and the Colts for V. For a more simplistic, older look, I also quite like the Packers rings for the first ever Super Bowl.
In any case, here are links and a video that shows what he new championship rings look like, as we prepare for another season, as we will watch every team and every player battle, hoping to earn the right to get their own rings at season’s end.
