NFL football is back.
The two local teams here for the greater New York area, the Giants and the Jets, kicked off their preseason with their traditional preseason meeting between the two teams last night. The Giants were technically the home team, although it hardly seems to matter all that much for these preseason meetings.
Neither offense put on a fireworks show, to say the least. In fact, the Giants offense produced no points until quite late in the fourth quarter, by which time pretty much most, if not all of the starters had been pulled.
At the time, the Jets were leading 10-0, so the touchdown pulled the G-Men to within a field goal.
After that, the Gang Green offense tried to run out the clock, and appeared well on their way to doing so, until the Giants defense finally stepped up and forced the punt just inside of two minutes left. That gave the Giants offense a chance, although they were backed up deep in their own territory, right with their backs pressed against their own end zone.
The result?
A Jets sack and a safety, making it 12-7, Jets.
With no timeouts left, the Giants could not kill the clock, and the Jets were able to preserve this win to open up this preseason.
Carl Banks, one of the commentators in the game, mentioned that this was a work in progress, a statement which seems true for both teams, in fact.
I watched most of that game, and agree with your assessment. The good news for Gang Green is that their offense apparently looked promising during the brief time that they used their rookie star quarterback Zach Wilson. (Which is the part that I missed, incidentally.) That at least produced a field goal, and according to a Washington Post article I found, his numbers were encouraging: "Three points, two drives and one solid debut for Zach Wilson. The No. 2 overall draft pick was efficient in his first NFL preseason game, going 6 of 9 for 63 yards and leading the New York Jets to a field goal against the Giants' backups on defense in a 12-7 victory Saturday night."
ReplyDeleteLike you said though, most of this game won't exactly be making the highlight reel. Frankly, considering how badly the Jets have struggled in recent years, 4 to 6 wins would be a modest step in the right direction. Anything more would be a welcome bonus.
I only saw the second half, which was more than enough. Glad to hear that the Jets offense looked good, though. But they apparently didn't show anything while I was watching.
