This is the NFL Wild Card weekend. And I ran into this video, which discusses the most devastating Wild Card losses in NFL history.
Of course, this video was released prior to the Chargers blowing a 27-0 loss to the Jaguars last night. I had worked two work shifts in a row, and had not slept much in about 24 hours. So I watched part of the game, and kept nodding off. But I was awake enough to see the Trevor Lawrence throw those three first quarter picks, which helped the Chargers take that commanding 17-0 lead. I woke up at one point to see that the Chargers had an even bigger lead, now 27-0. I allowed myself to just sleep, assuming that the game was over. But I did wake up, and saw that the score was 30-20 at some point. Think that it was late in the third or early in the fourth. Tried to stay awake, since it looked suddenly interesting, but did not manage it. Just fell asleep, and woke up well into Saturday Night Live. Watched a bit of that, and then turned the television off and slept the rest of the night. When I found out that Jax had actually pulled off the huge comeback win, it was a bit of a shock. They really are an up and coming team. As for the Chargers, that has to rank as one of the worst losses in that franchise's history. And it would probably rank on this list, if this video were made after the fact. Obviously, last night's game is too recent, though.
For the most part, this is a decent list, and I can agree with pretty much all of them. No losses as fun, especially in the playoffs. But some are particularly devastating. And indeed, some of these losses rank among the most painful playoff losses that any team has suffered.
Indeed, some teams seem to figure fairly prominently on this list. That includes my Giants, who have one in the top five of most devastating, and have one or two more that rank as "honorable mention." I would agree. Then, there are other teams, like the Oilers, who gave up that 32-point lead to the Bills. And there are the Browns, who are no strangers to devastating playoff losses. The Lions also know huge disappointment, and that includes Wild Card disappointment, as well.
Take a look at this list, and see if you agree. Most of the games were in relatively recent playoff history, although that kind of makes sense. After all, there are more Wild Card games these days than ever before, so most of them would have to be relatively recent, right?
Enjoy!
