The emergence of the Foo Fighters was good news back in the mid-nineties. It seemed that they were rising from the ashes of what had been Nirvana and, at least initially, it felt like their music was a bit reminiscent of Nirvana, to boot. But they gravitated over time, changed their style. Dave Grohl became a bona fide frontman in his own right. And the Foo Fighters began to assert a very strong identity, emerging out of Nirvana's shadow and becoming one of the relatively few bright spots for alternative/grunge just as the mainstream popularity of that scene was beginning to go on a serious decline. They have remained one of the bright spots for hard rock ever since.
Last year, obviously, the band had to deal with a real shock, probably the biggest one the band has had to confront to date. Nothing seemed certain for the Foo Fighters after the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins. Shortly after his death, they cancelled all scheduled concert dates for the year, insisting that they needed a break, needed some time to recover. Understandable.
Now, they are vowing to continue, to keep going as a band. To be sure, they are making it clear that things will be different.
However, they will go on as a band, which is good news.
