There is a new global organization out there that is attempting to provide greater unity and partnership between a group of powerful nations in an attempt to counter the influence, or even the traditional dominance, of the West. Each of these nations are at least regional superpowers, with China being already a global superpower.
It is called BRICS, an acronym for the involved nations - Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. It has generated controversy since its inception, a fact that is not really all that surprising. After all, it is a deliberate attempt by some of the world's most powerful and influential nations to try and detract from the political and cultural dominance that the West - particularly the United States - has exerted.
Another major controversy at the moment is that one of the nations involved, Russia, has been condemned by much of the world for it's actions in invading Ukraine. In fact, Putin has been deemed a war criminal, and there is an arrest warrant out for him by the world community. This has obviously been a major point of contention, since there are concerns that an appearance by Putin in August might result in arrest.
Still, this is an interesting development by some of the world's emerging powers. The West can hardly claim outright innocence, since their vested interests, and the power that they more often than not have exerted in pursuing their sometimes blind self-interest, has angered much of the rest of the world. Something like this felt, frankly, inevitable. The surprise is that this did not happen sooner, truth be told.
This should be interesting to follow over the course of the coming years.
