Saturday Funny: Jets Impressed By How Quickly Aaron Rodgers Complaining About Roster

New York Jets

Usually I publish these on Sunday.

However, this is a weekend. Also, it felt like this was timely, given that the long anticipated trade of Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers to the New York Jets has been finalized, at long last.

There still are arguments about just who won out on the deal. After all, it seemed clear that Rodgers was not ever going to play for the Packers again. Also, he seemed to have been well past his prime in what was, for him, a mediocre season last year. Finally, Rodgers sometimes was a blatantly polarizing figure away from the football field for Green Bay. One of the things that he did, which many people were less than thrilled with, was seemingly get too involved in what generally is regarded the domain of coaches, particularly regarding the roster.

Now, I have said this before, yet I will go ahead and say this again: this reminds me too much of when the Jets obtained another former Green Bay Packers quarterbacking legend. Remember Brett Favre, and just how disastrous that wound up being? I mean, the similarities are striking, not least of all with the apparently over-sized egos for both of them. Favre got off to a solid start for the Jets in his one and only season with Gang Green, but they quickly faded late in the season, and missed the playoffs.

Let me make it clear that I hope Aaron Rodgers is every bit as good as everyone who considers themselves enthusiastic Jets fans believe he will be. Some seem ready to make Super Bowl reservations. Personally, this seems a bit premature. Again, this guy is clearly at the tail end of his career, and there were signs that he might be slowing down. However, I would love to be wrong about this. Seriously! This would be one time when I would likely be thrilled to be dead wrong. I would celebrate a Jets appearance - and especially a victory - in the Super Bowl. And if Aaron Rodgers is the guy who finally brings Gang Green there again for the first time in over half a century, I will gladly admit to being wrong. It is just that this reminds me too much of the Brett Favre fiasco, as well as some other major acquisitions of big name talent that never took off. Guys like Boomer Esiason, Neil O'Donnell, LaDainian Tomlinson, and perhaps some others who are not immediately coming to mind. And again, Rodgers brings some doubts for many people to pick at, including signs of diminished skill, and a potentially distracting, polarizing presence.

So in that spirit, this article from "The Onion" shows just how quickly the New York Jets should have come to expect this less than savory side of Rodgers to appear and cause problems. As with some - even many - articles by "The Onion," I did not actually open it and read it. Still, the headline was enough to get a chuckle out of it, and so it seemed worth sharing here.

Enjoy!
