Joe Namath turned 80 years old two days ago.
So granted, this birthday acknowledgement comes two days late, admittedly. But better late than never, right?
Now, Joe Namath is surely the greatest quarterback in the history of the New York Football Jets organization. He took inspiration from Muhammad Ali and famously guaranteed that the upstart Jets, who were prohibitive underdogs on a historical level, would beat the mighty Baltimore Colts, who some felt were making the case as the greatest team ever, and were very heavily favored. He went on to lead his team to the unforgettable upset win, which helped make the Super Bowl what it is. Suddenly, it became a game when anything could happen, and that was in large part due to that particular upset.
Namath was known as "Broadway Joe." He was flashy, incredibly confident and good-looking. What he did on the field was impressive enough, especially during that championship season of 1968-69. But he then went on to become a bona fide celebrity. He acted in some movies and dated some of the most beautiful women of the time. He also starred in a famous commercial for pantyhose for women.
He always seemed to be in good spirits and has shown a good sense of humor. Often times, he commentated on games. Through it all, he always supported Gang Green, and seemed to hope that they would make their way back to the Super Bowl and win. As of my writing this, the Jets still have never gone back to one, much less won it again, and it's been over 54 years and counting. A lot of people are making a big deal of Aaron Rodgers, even suggesting that he makes the Jets an instant Super Bowl contender. I really hope that he does lead them to the Super Bowl, and hopefully, wins it for them.
Until somebody else leads the Jets to that promised land, Namath stands alone as the most legendary quarterback in this organization's history. And despite it having been only one day over half a century ago, his one truly glorious moment shined brightly enough that we still remember and honor it all of these years later.
