Rafael Nadal was a class act almost immediately after Djokovic clinched his third French Open title, and his 23rd overall Grand Slam title.
Nadal, of course, could not pursue another title at Roland-Garros himself, where he would have been aiming for an astonishing 15th French Open title, and what would have been his own record 23rd career Grand Slam title.
A 14-time French Open champion himself, Nadal wrote: "Many congrats on this amazing achievement @DjokerNole 23 is a number that just a few years back was impossible to think about, and you made it! Enjoy it with your family and team!"
“I always compared myself to Federer and Nadal because those were the two greatest rivals I had in my career,” Djokovic said in his post-match press conference (via Jose Morgado). “They defined me as a player.
“I spent countless hours of thinking how to win against Federer and Nadal. Those two guys were occupying my mind in the last 20 years quite a lot… It's amazing to know that I'm ahead of both of them in Grand Slams. But everyone writes their own history.”
