Climate Update for the Weekend of July 25 - 26th, 2026

 

Sorry if I sound like a broken record, with these constant climate updates as of late.

But look around. Western Europe had the hottest month of May on record, followed by the hottest month of June on record. So far, they have had two different heat waves in July, which means that there might be a chance that this would mark the hottest month of July on record. 

The news reports keep showing the wildfires in France and Spain, and how some 200,000 people have been evacuated as a result of these wildfires.

Meanwhile, we are seeing massive wildfires in the eastern half of North America (particularly in Canada) suddenly becoming a harsh reality. It seems to me that such unnatural phenomena as this can easily be regarded as a by-product of climate change. Yet, the American president, who claims that climate change is nothing more than a "Chinese hoax," is raising tariffs on Canada as punishment for impacting air quality in the United States in recent days. Imagine, the leader of the nation that historically contributed far more harmful gases that contributed to climate change (and much of the pollution went to Canada, who then had to deal with it) now getting high and mighty and punishing Canada while they are dealing with something which Americans may very well have contributed to. Talk about kicking them while they are down. 

Now, there are reports of camels dying in Africa due to extreme heat. Camels, which are known to be able to survive desert heat. But they are struggling with the excessive heat that we have been seeing as of late.

The Horn of Africa, where many camels are from, is still reeling from the longest and most extreme recorded drought from 2020 to 2023. But these kinds of extreme conditions have been coming back as of late.

Everything slows down for a camel when it is forced to operate in extreme heat. It does not eat, which means that there is a drop in milk production and can cause other health actors. 

When I see stories like this, it makes me wonder if, despite how accurately scientists have projected the climate change disaster over the past decades, if there are perhaps some things which even they did not fully appreciate or understand. 

Scary times we live in.
