Trump Tries to Help Team USA & Becomes Butt of Still More Jokes As a Result

It's uncanny. Everything that Trump gets involved with is made immediately worse as a result of him having gotten involved. Indeed, he is King Midas, but in reverse. Things might be going well, but Trump's decision to get involved will surely change all of that.

Witness the latest example of this unsettling trend. Last week, the United States advanced to the Round of 16 by defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, Team USA's biggest star, Folarin Balogun, received a red card during the game. That meant that he would not be allowed to play in the elimination game against Belgium last night in Seattle.

Enter Donald Trump. Because everyone knows that important decisions made at FIFA games are subject to review by the sitting President of the United States. Clearly, Trump is doing his job so well in the Oval Office that he has plenty of time to watch and get involved with a soccer game, right?

Anyway, Trump had his say and got FIFA to reverse the decision. Let's remember that FIFA President Gianni Infantino has a history with Trump, having soothed the Orange One's notoriously fragile ego after not receiving the Nobel peace Prize by creating a whole new thing, something called the FIFA Peace Prize. Trump gladly accepted this de facto participation trophy. It also made both FIFA and Trump look absolutely ridiculous in the process.

It is only the second time in World Cup history that a red card decision by a referee has been overturned.

While explaining himself (yes, he admitted to pulling his weight in order to get FIF to reverse the red card decision), Trump claimed to know a lot about sports. He emphasized that second time.

Less than a minute later, he admitted that he did not really know what a red card meant.

Trump just never tires of humiliating himself, and humiliating the country he represents simultaneously. What a loser.

Belgium appealed the decision, but was ultimately rejected. The pressure that Trump put on FIFA to have this decision reversed stood. Balogun could play the game against Belgium.

The result of all of this?

It fired Belgium up. They dominated the game, 4-1.

After one of the goals that Belgium scored, the players did the Trump dance. Obviously, mocking the American president.

Then they trolled Team USA, FIFA, and President Trump after the game with this post on X:

After the final whistle blew, Belgium soccer's official X account published a post with an image of their players celebrating alongside a two-word caption: "Overturn this."

Ouch. How embarrassing..

Word has it that Trump is calling Infantino right now to reverse the outcome of this game.

Frankly, I think that the United States losing this game actually was a favor of sorts by Belgium for American soccer/football. Had Team USA won, it would always be remembered as the game where Trump essentially got involved and, well, cheated. Let's be real: whether or not the red card was a good decision or not, it is not up to the President of the United States to get involved.

Period.

So for Trump to have gotten involved is a source of embarrassment and shame. Belgium protested before the game, dominated during the game, and trolled the United States after the game. That's uncharacteristic, because usually, teams handle themselves quietly and with class. But when you give a team something to feed on in the locker room like this, they will use it. Clearly, Belgium did.

That the United States lost, therefore, is possibly a product of Trump's involvement. Suddenly, the game was making world headlines, and for all of the wrong reasons. Frankly, I almost feel like Trump added pressure to Team USA. At the very least, he did not help matters, but it sure feels like he might have actually made things considerably worse.

Which is pretty much what he does generally, with everything. In every way.

For what it's worth, congratulations to Belgium on the big win and moving onto the quarterfinal round.

As for Team USA, it was a solid tournament. They won their group and won an elimination game for the first time in decades. This latest news cast them in a bad light, although that really was not their fault. It ended on a sour note, but they do have a lot to be proud about.

Finally, let's hope that the rest of this World Cup does not have politics anymore. That seems unlikely, as Trump made sure that he would be the one presenting the trophy to the winning side at the end.

Can you imagine if it ends up being Belgium who wins? Not that it would necessarily be likely, but that would actually be pretty funny and awkward.

But yes, this felt like the most political World Cup ever. And that's saying something, as the last two World Cups were held in Putin's Russia and in Qatar. There were plenty of political controversies there, too. But nothing like Trump's involvement with FIFA for this World Cup. The whole FIF Peace Participation Trophy was a debacle, and this was an even bigger fiasco.

Can't we pleeeeeeease get someone else - pretty much anyone else - to give the eventual champions the trophy? Pretty please?
