Yes, the writers of the Simpsons predicted that Donald Trump would one day occupy the Oval Office, although they hardly seemed thrilled about it.
Well, they also seemed to predict the angry glare from Swedish teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg earlier this week, when Donald Trump came into the room with his ridiculous swagger, and his big mouth running, as it always does, even while most people with any sense know that, in fact, he has absolutely nothing of substance to say.
The eldest daughter in the animated series, Lisa Simpson, was always the activist voice, the conscience of the show, if you will. And in episodes from over a decade ago, Lisa Simpson was an activist trying to get people to wake up to the abuses against the environment.
And in another episode aired in 2016, Lisa Simpson glared at Donald Trump when he came waltzing into the room, for that matter. It was a scene that was eerily similar to what would happen in real life, when Thunberg’s glare at the incompetent symbol of climate change denial waltzed into the United Nations after having entirely ignored the environmental conference that had been taking place just before.
Remember, Trump is obviously the most famous name and face, and the loudest voice, of climate change denial. He once infamously claimed that it was all a hoax invented by the Chinese in order to hurt the American economy, even though he denied this during one of the presidential debates against Hillary Clinton. He has remained skeptical from the get go, and pulled the United States out of the Paris Climate Accord, weakened environmental laws and especially the Environmental Protection Agency, and tried to censor any and all mention of climate change within the National Parks system, which seems to me against the spirit of the Bill of Rights, and freedom of speech and thought.
Apparently, watching the Simpsons has been a little bit of a crystal ball into the future.
Hopefully, there is an episode of a post-Trump America, when the country finally puts this nightmare of a presidency behind it, and begins to recover from the abuses and divisions that the presidency fostered and represented.
