Green Bay Packers 10, Chicago Bears 3 - Okay, so the first game of this 100th NFL season is in the history books. And in the end, it met many expectations, yet probably surprised more than a few people in some respects, as well.
Everyone knew going in that the Chicago Bears were supposed to have an incredible defense, and so a low scoring affair that would come down to the final minutes of the final quarter surely was not all that surprising.
However, the wrong defense wound up looking like the truly elite unit.
Yes, that is right: it was the Packers who thwarted seemingly almost every offensive series by the Bears, as Chicago quarterback Mitch Trubisky played poorly to the point where his own home fans were booing him. By the end of the game, Trubisky had completed 26 of 45 passes and thrown for 228 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception. But those statistics do not reveal the full story. He looked shaken by the tough Green Bay defense, and completely unsure of himself. It seemed that Green Bay had him on the run time and time again, and Trubisky never seemed to show leadership or even effectiveness with his on field performance. There was never a serious sense that he seemed capable of leading his team from being down 7-3 to the Packers ever since the only touchdown in the game in the second quarter, until the Packers added a field goal for cushion in the final minutes of the game.
For his efforts, Trubisky was booed, repeatedly and loudly. The home crowd was very unhappy, and they let him know it. There were some doubts about Trubisky last season, and some questioned if he was as good as the Bears had hoped. Clearly, many Chicago fans are unhappy, and blaming him for the complete ineffectiveness of the Bears offense.
Aaron Rodgers, meanwhile, completed 18 of 30 passed for 203 yards and one touchdown, with no interceptions. Certainly, it was not a record shattering game for him, either. However, he seemed happy, almost elated, in postgame interviews, and kept reiterating the same point, that the Packers now had a defense. Clearly, he was proud of the defensive unit, and elated to do whatever it took to earn the win.
It was a low-scoring affair, a defensive struggle, that served as the season opener. Not a shocker, whenever the Bears are involved. But again, many were surprised with just how dominant the Packers defense looked.
For the home crowd, there was a little bit of excitement, as members of the 1985 Super Bowl championship squad, particularly those who participated in the “Super Bowl Shuffle,” came out and tried to fire the crowd up before the game.
But this Bears team bore very little resemblance to that championship team, other than the uniforms.
A solid win for the Pack, a terrible loss and bad start to the new season for Da Bears, who already seem to have to go into crisis management mode to deal with just how incredibly unhappy the Chicago faithful clearly were after this one.. My prediction: Inaccurate
