On this day back in 1846, German astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle looked out through his telescope, and found a new planet: Neptune. He was at the Berlin Observatory at the time.
French astronomer Urbain-Jean-Joseph Le Verrier had expressed his belief that this planet, which came to be known as Neptune, was there. But it was on this day, 173 years ago, that this belief was finally confirmed by Johann Gottfried Galle.
