First Presidential Debate of 2020 Turns Into Chaotic Debacle

The thing that summed up last night’s presidential debate more than anything else for me was not from either of the two men who actually participated in the debate. No, it came from comedian Stephen Colbert, who joked about it in his live show immediately after the debate, announcing in his best boxing announcer’s voice:

“Let’s get ready to watch democracy CRUMB – BLE!”

Yup. That pretty much is what it feels like we are watching, too. If you can’t laugh, you would need to cry. Or despair.

Allow me to say right up front that I did not exactly have high expectations for the presidential debate last night. Yet somehow, even with my expectations being set quite low, the debate proved to disappoint my quite modest expectations for them.

Like most people, after watching it, I felt a mixture of things. Frustration. Anger. Confusion. Desperation for the state of the country.

This is a nation of over 330 million people, and many of them are incredibly bright, thoughtful, capable people. And then you have these two old men, trading barbs and trying to talk over one another, particularly Trump, who has that legendary big mouth of his. Am I the only one who is asking my self if this is the best leadership that the country can look forward to?  I mean, really, what the hell was that, anyway? It was pathetic. Hard to follow, because the moderator, Chris Wallace of FOX News, lost control almost from the first. He tried to sound like he had authority, but it was so obvious that he lacked any real authority to rein in either of the two men when they got out of line.  Forget about fact-checking, for that matter.

Some of what passed for “highlights?”

Well, once again, Trump hesitated to the point of refusal when asked directly by both Wallace and Biden to condemn white supremacy.

Shocker, huh?

Some right-wing pundits have tried to defend him since, suggesting that he has condemned white supremacy in the past. He did not do it clearly in  this debate, even when both Wallace and Biden were pressing him to do it, he declined, and railed against Antifa instead. When asked why, his supporters found some lame excuses, but the bottom line seems clear: he refuses to condemn white supremacists because they are a strong part of his base of support, and doing so might compromise some of those crucial votes that he needs to have a hope of winning. It is not difficult to figure out, if you have an ounce of honesty and integrity. And Trump's willingness to continually bow down to white supremacist groups who see in him a champion of their cause.

Biden lost his cool at times, although you have to admit that there is little way that any reasonably intelligent and serious person could have done otherwise. At one point, Biden told Trump to shut up. At another, he suggested that Trump was a clown. While I do not disagree with that, it is nevertheless sad to see just how horribly the quality of our national debate has declined. It felt at times like we were not watching two grown men, two senior citizens, debating the most important issues of the day, as much as we watched two children arguing, quite literally.

It was hard to understand what either man was saying, mostly because Trump almost never makes sense, and he tried to drown out anything that Biden had to say with his big mouth.

Just awful. And I feel that it was symbolic of where the country is right now, as well.

By now, I can hardly claim to be shocked. After all, we have now had four years of this garbage. But it was very depressing, and sobering.

The question, though, is whether or not enough Americans got that same sense in order to make a very necessary change come November.

Update From the French Open/ Roland Garros For September 29, 2020

Roland Garros/French Open

It's time for an update on the French Open now. It is strange to follow and update news of the French Open/ Roland Garros late in September, soon to be October outright. Strange also to see some of the tennis players, men and women alike, seemingly bundled up for a tennis match, at least by normal standards. Many of them have been wearing long leggings, and some have been wearing long sleeves. This is almost never the case during other Grand Slam tournaments, including the French Open, when it is being held during more normal, warmer times of the year. But this has obviously been a strange year.

Anyway, here is the latest tennis news from Paris. World number one on the men's side Novak Djokovic easily dispatched Mikael Ymer from Sweden, 6-0, 6-2, 6-3. The world number two, Rafael Nadal, also won easily against Egor Gerasimov of Belarus, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. No surprises there.

There were two seemingly feature matches that seemed a little unusual for happening so early in a Grand Slam tournament, coming as they did in the first round. Two former US Open champions, Dominic Thiem (2020) and Marin ČiliΔ‡ (2014) faced off. Thiem, fresh off capturing the US Open title, and considered one of the big favorites here in Paris, and one of the few men who would figure to have a real chance against the King of Clay Nadal, managed to dispatch with ČiliΔ‡ in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.

And in another intriguing match, former French Open champion Stan Wawrinka, who captured the French Open title here in 2015, knocked off Andy Murray, 6-1, 6-3, 6-2. Murray, a former number one ranked player with three career Grand Slam titles and two Olympic Gold medals to his credit, as well as having been the ITF World Champion in 2016 (winning the year end number one ranking), is trying to resume his playing career after being plagued by injuries. But facing Wawrinka is the first round is a brutal way to have to try and come back obviously.

No major upsets on the men's side or anything thus far. On the women's side, Serene Williams won her first match in the first round, as she pursues what would be a record-tying 24th career major title. The major news was Kristina Mladenovic, who was attempting to bounce back from a headline making exit from the US Open just weeks ago, due to her being quarantined. In the first round here at Roland Garros, she lost to Laura Siegemund of Germany 7-5, 6-3. But she had been up and serving for the first set at 5-1, when she totally lost her cool after chair umpire Eva Asderaki Siegmund a point after failing to see that the ball had bounced twice. A replay showed that it had indeed bounced twice. Still, Mladenovic's total collapse and early exit after that did not fail to raise some eyebrows.

🏈 NFL 2020 Monday Night Football Week # 3 Review: Kansas City Wins Big Showdown of the Unbeatens 🏈

🏈🏈🏈🏈

Kansas City Chiefs

at

Baltimore Ravens

Yes, the defending champions did it. They showed why they rose to become champs last season in convincingly downing the previously undefeated – and seemingly incredibly dominant – Ravens in Baltimore.

The Ravens took a lead in the first quarter after scoring a field goal, but the Chiefs scored a touchdown as an answer, taking the lead. They never trailed for the duration of the game, building their lead up and answering back each time the Ravens scored and tried to get back into the game the rest of the way.

How impressive was the Kansas City offense last night?

They produced an incredibly 517 total yards. Meanwhile, KC’s defense also stepped up, limiting the Ravens to just 220 total yards of offense. The Chiefs hung onto the ball for almost 34 minutes, and earned 29 first downs, to just 16 for the Ravens, who looked really flat pretty much all night.

To their credit, the Ravens did manage to tighten the game early in the fourth quarter, when they scored a touchdown to make it 27-20. But Mahomes ended any remaining suspense minutes later when he found Eric Fisher for a 2-yard touchdown pass to ice the game. Mahomes ended the night having completed 31 of 42 passes for 385 yards and four touchdowns.

In a losing effort for Baltimore, Lamar Jackson completed 15 of 28 passes for just 07 yards and one touchdown. He also led his team on the ground, earning 83 yards on nine carries. But it was obviously not enough.

With the win, Kansas City remains one of six perfect teams, and one of four unbeaten teams in the AFC, one each for every division in the conference. They also pulled into sole possession of first place in the AFC West with the Raiders loss on Sunday. They will next take on the Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots at Arrowhead Stadium.

For the Ravens, this was a disappointing loss, which saw them lose their first game. They now trail the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC North. They will not have to travel far for their next game, as they visit the Washington Football Team next week.

My prediction: Inaccurate

⚽️ ⚽️ PSG Getting Hot, Knocks Off Reims, 2-0 ⚽️ ⚽️

⚽️ ⚽️ 2 Paris Saint-Germain - Reims 0  ⚽️  ⚽️

 Paris Saint-Germain - Reims ( 2-0 )

PSG is starting to really rebound solidly after dropping their

Mauro Icardi had a monster game, scoring both of PSG’s goal. He scored the first one in the 9th minute to give PSG the early lead in the game. After that, it took all the way to the 62nd minute for PSG to follow that up, but once again, it was Icardi who scored, allowing PSG to put the game mostly out of reach for Reims.

With their third consecutive win, PSG has begun to climb back in the Ligue 1 standing. They currently are paying the price of their early lull, as they are currently seventh, well behind Rennes, the team that is currently leading in the standings with 13 pints in just five games. PSG currently has nine points in the same number of game. But the season is young, and still, anything can happen yet.

🏈 NFL 2020 Week 3 Review 🏈

🏈🏈🏈🏈

Week 3 feels like it began to give a more solid taste of what the NFL season will likely shape up like. If there were some surprises in the first couple of weeks, by week three, some definite trends are beginning to emerge.

For example, we have to scratch our heads at the NFC East. Between the four teams in that division, they have compiled an overall record of 2-9-1. Two wins in the 12 combined games these teams have played, and one of those wins was against another NFC East team. The other win came against the winless Falcons, and it took a mighty comeback on the part of Dallas to squeak that win out. That’s right, the entire division has fewer wins than any of the remaining unbeaten teams. Not a good sign when the two teams tied for first in the division are both 1-2. The Eagles are winless, but at least they managed a tie. The Giants are also winless, but they got ripped by the visiting San Francisco 49ers. It is not looking especially promising for the NFC East so far, and none of the teams in that division look ready to jump among the elite teams in the league.

Meanwhile, some teams appear to be establishing their credentials of being top tier teams.

Heading into tonight’s big Monday Night Football showdown, there are five AFC teams that have maintained an undefeated record so far. The Bills stayed unbeaten by beating the undefeated Rams, while the Titans just hung on to defeat the still winless Vikings. And the Steelers also managed to withstand a tough challenge to eventually knock off the also still winless Texans. Whoever wins tonight’s game will join these three franchises as the remaining undefeated teams in the AFC.

As for the NFC, you have the Chicago Bears, who overcame a 26-10 Falcons lead in the final quarter to remain unbeaten at 3-0. For winless Atlanta, it’s hard to imagine just how dispirited they have to feel, as they keep blowing big leads. Yet, the Bears are not alone even in their own division, as the Packers outscored the Saints in a Sunday Night shootout. Green Bay’s offense so far looks like the best and most dangerous in the league so far, scoring almost 40 points per game to date. The other undefeated NFC team are the Seahawks, who survived a tough game against Dallas, and stayed perfect. With that win, they move into sole possession of first place, as both the Cardinals and Rams lost, joining the 49ers at 2-1, with each nipping on the heels of Seattle.

On the flip side, there are four winless teams remaining in the NFC, although the Eagles at least managed a tie this week against the Bengals. The Vikings, Giants, and Falcons all remain winless. On the AFC side, the Jets, Bengals, Broncos, and Texans are also winless, although again, Cincinnati managed that tie.

So, the NFC West is really good, the NFC East is pretty bad, and there are some favorites now emerging in the league, as well as some disappointments. The Texans, Eagles, and Saints have looked disappointing so far, while the Bills, Titans, and Bears look like they are at least meeting, if not exceeding, expectations to this point.

Let’s take a look at the games from week three of NFL action:

San Francisco 36, NY Giants 9 – Yikes! I was hoping that the Giants would at least have a good showing, if not outright pull off a win, against a 49ers team seriously depleted from injuries. It was 6-6 for a while, and then I think it was 16-6 by halftime, more or less when I left work. But by the time I got home and flicked the television on, the game was already out of hand, with the 49ers up, 29-9. I turned it off, not bothering to watch any of the rest of that game. I mean, seriously? They cannot even make a game of it against a good 49ers team that should have been unusually weak? Very disappointing that Big Blue could not even make this game competitive, and got blown out like that. Not a good sign for the remainder of the season, as the G-Men look, once again, like one of the worst teams in the league once again. The offense stalled yet again, and the defense got sliced up, also once again. Tiresome to watch, and indeed, there was no point in watching. For me, a fan of the Giants since 1981, I decided to turn that game off and watch the far more interesting Bills-Rams game instead. Just a bad, bad game for the Giants, who actually managed to outdo the Jets in terms of how bad they were this weekend, as well as against the 49ers, specifically. My prediction: Accurate

Buffalo 35, LA Rams 32 – This was an exciting game, with the Bills initially taking a big lead, followed by an impressive comeback by the Rams, who actually took a lead late in the game, before Buffalo finally rallied to win it right at the end. Both teams had entered this game looking solid, and both teams showed fight, showed heart, showed why they happened to still be undefeated to this point. It looked like the Bills were about to blow a big lead, because the Rams seemed to have all of the momentum when they were rallying. To their credit, the Bills answered back after LA took the lead, and Buffalo held on for the win to stay undefeated. A solid performance by both teams, one that they can each be proud of. My prediction: Accurate

Indianapolis 36, NY Jets 7 – It seemed this weekend that the two New York NFL franchises were competing with one another for how ugly they could look. I suspect that my Giants won, b virtue of getting blown out at home to a watered-down 49ers team. But the Jets sure put up a good fight in that regard, by not putting up a fight in Indianapolis. This game went from bad to worse to completely out of hand. Quarterback Sam Darnell had a very bad game, getting sacked twice (once for a safety) and throwing thee interceptions, including two pick sixes. Winning on the road can often be tough, and Indianapolis can be especially tough when the Colts are hot, as they clearly were today. But this effort by the Jets was bad. The offense looked horrendous, and the defense hardly looked much better. And the Jets, like the Giants, are 0-3. Apparently, the two New York teams are competing for the first pick in the draft this season. Just an awful game for Gang Green, and even though it is still only September, the JETS once again seem to stand for Just End The Season yet again. Brutal. My pick: Accurate

Chicago 30, Atlanta 26 – Another late game collapse by the Atlanta Falcons. This has got to be embarrassing, and more than a little demoralizing. It seems obvious by now that the Falcons never quite got over that humiliating collapse in the Super Bowl, blowing that 28-3 lead to the Patriots, where it seemed that they did everything possible to accommodate New England. They never looked the same after that. Still, they took a 20-point lead against the Cowboys last week, and then blew that. Now, they had a 16-point lead in the fourth quarter at home against Chicago, and that went awry, as the Bears scored 20 unanswered fourth quarter points to pull off a stunning come-from-behind road win to stay unbeaten. A huge win for Chicago, and yet another crushing loss for the Falcons, who are watching their season seem to spiral out of control yet again. Some major changes will probably be coming to that organization in the near future, because whatever good they show in getting these big leads is obviously overshadowed by the bad that allows teams to come back from them. My pick: Accurate

Cleveland 34, Washington 20 – The Browns were not playing especially well for much of the first half, until the final six minutes, when they scored two touchdown to take a 17-7 lead by halftime. Washington dominated the third quarter, actually taking a 20-17 lead after scoring two touchdowns. But Cleveland completely dominated the fourth quarter, scoring two touchdowns and a field goal to put this one on ice, earning their second straight win. The two teams were more or less even in most categories, except for one glaringly obvious one that has a lot of impact: Washington committed five turnovers, to none for the Browns. Cleveland is now 2-1 on the season, while Washington falls to 1-2. My pick: Accurate

Pittsburgh 28, Houston 21 - The Steelers managed to overcome several momentum swings and pull off what was expected: another victory at home against a weaker opponent. Pittsburgh did not play extremely well, but it is saying something that they nevertheless played just well enough to ultimately win after all of that. As for the Texans? Well, the most difficult stretch of their season was surely going to be first three weeks. Yes, it was brutal, and not surprisingly, the Texans are 0-3 after that. But the good news is that the rest of their schedule should feel like they are looking downhill after that stretch. Take their next two games: both home games, first against Minnesota, then Jacksonville. The Vikings are not as bad as their 0-3 record suggests, but neither are the Texans. And the Jaguars could be tough, but both of those games feel winnable to me for Houston, in a way that the three games to open this season up did not. My prediction: Accurate

New England 36, Las Vegas 20 - A lot of people were suggesting, or in some cases outright predicting, that the rug would be swept out from under the Patriots this season, that it would be a disaster for them. Some even seemed to hint that they might be one of the worst teams in the league. After all, they had not only lost Tom Brady, but a number of their defensive starters decided to sit the year out. Okay, but here's the thing: they still have most of the players that produced truly great results in recent seasons. Indeed, I agree that they might not be what they once were, but to think that they will go from one extreme to the next feels just...well, absurd. The Patriots look tough so far after three games. Not like the best team in the league, at least not anymore. But like a decent team, and quite possibly a playoff contender? Yeah, that is what it feels like thus far. They got another solid win at home, knocking off the previously unbeaten Raiders, and soundly at that. My prediction: Accurate

Cincinnati 23, Philadelphia 23 (tie) – Is it me, or do the Eagles seem to have more ties than pretty much any other team in the league? Ties do not happen too often, but the Eagles seem to have been involved in a few of them. This one, though, probably should have been a win. They were the better overall team, with more talent and more experience. Plus, they had home field advantage. Yet, they were on the verge of losing, before saving themselves from that fate with a very late touchdown with just 21 seconds left to play in the fourth quarter, as Carson Wentz ran it in to force overtime. Once there, neither team scored, and thus, the tie. My pick: Inaccurate

Tennessee 31, Minnesota 30 – I picked this game as the upset special, believing that the Vikings would surprise the Titans and hand them their first loss of the season. They very nearly did, but the Titans overcame a 24-12 deficit late in the third quarter to come storming back. Titans placekicker Stephen Gostkowsk had a very busy day, kicking six field goals through the uprights, including two in the final minutes of the fourth quarter to allow the Titans to escape with the victory. Tennessee remains unbeaten and improves to 3-0, while Minnesota remains winless and drops to 0-3. My prediction: Inaccurate

Carolina 21, LA Chargers 16 – This one was admittedly a surprising result to me. The Chargers just never seemed to get in any kind of a rhythm. Their defense played fairly well, preventing the Panthers from scoring any touchdowns. Yet, they got one field goal after the other, as Carolina placekicker Joey Slye ultimately kicked seven field goals, accounting for all of the Panther points. The chargers did not help themselves by committing four turnovers, while Carolina avoided tuning the ball over even once. And in the end, these two factors combined to allow the Panthers to have just enough to win an impressive road game, and get themselves off the list of winless teams. A disappointment for the Chargers, who are not looking like they can keep up with the two better teams in the division, the Raiders and especially the Chiefs. My pick: Inaccurate

Detroit 26, Arizona 23 – Speaking of surprising outcomes, I admittedly did not see this one coming. Of course, the Cardinals are a young and improving team, and I kind of figured that their bubble this season was going to burst at some point. It just did not seem likely that it would happen at home against Detroit, a team that had not won a single game dating back to October of last year, and their first road win since last September. Of course, the Cardinals did not help their cause by committing three turnovers, while Detroit committed none. A solid effort and a good win for the Lions, who move ahead of the Vikings in the NFC North, and finally get the monkey of a massive losing streak off their backs. My prediction: Inaccurate

Tampa Bay 28, Denver 10 – The Buccaneers re starting to look better than I had expected them to look this season. Honestly, I did not necessarily think that the experiment with adding Brady and Gronk would work. Apparently, I may have been wrong, because they look impressive thus far. Sure, they lost that one game to the Saints, but they did not look awful there, and have pulled off two straight wins since. This one was quite convincing, too, as Brady proved capable of winning in a place where he often has hit a brick wall in the past, with three playoff defeats coming in the Mile High City during his time in New England. But he played well yesterday, and it was enough for the win, even if this was not a postseason game. The Bucs move up to 2-1 on the season, while Denver drops to 0-3. My pick: Inaccurate

Seattle 38, Dallas 31 – What a game this was! Two teams that seemed to figure to be among the elite teams in the NFC this season (although I am still not sold on the Cowboys just yet, or anyone in the NFC East this season, frankly). The Seahawks seemed to be playing much better, and even owned a seemingly decisive 30-15 lead. But to their credit, the Cowboys battled back, and actually took  narrow one-point lead late in the fame. But the Seahawks managed to answer with a touchdown, as Russell Wilson threw his fifth touchdown pass of the game, finding DK Metcalf for a 29-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion made the final score what it was, after the drive by Dallas ended in an interception in the end zone after what seemed like a promising start. This was the second straight game that Wilson threw five touchdown passes. Maybe Seattle’s defense does not look as tough and intimidating as it did a few years ago, during the salad days, but their offense seems to be one of the most dangerous offense in the league at the moment. Wow! And such a good game this was. My pick: Accurate

Sunday Night Football: Green Bay 37, New Orleans 30 – What a game this turned out to be! It was explosive, featured several momentum changes. It seemed like the Saints had momentum at points, and then Green Bay would answer back. These two franchises figure to have a real chance at a title this season, and so this was a featured match, with two of the greatest quarterbacks in history squaring off against one another. In the end, though, it seems that the problems and limitations that have prevented the Saints from going farther in the postseason have been hurting them this season, as well. They could not get the job done last week in Las Vegas against the Raiders, and once again, they stalled at the most inopportune time in this game. Their defense just had no answers to try and keep that incredibly explosive Packers offense in line, and Green Bay sliced that defense apart with clinical precision. The Packers defense also showed weaknesses at times, but with an offense like that, they should be in every game. As for the Saints, they have to start making things happen soon, before this slump starts to threaten to derail the early part of their season. My pick: Inaccurate

🏈 The Giants & 49ers Set To Renew Rivalry In the Age of Covid-19 🏈

🏈🏈🏈🏈

The Giants and 49ers have a long and storied rivalry. The peak of the rivalry came in the decade between 1981 and 1990. In those ten seasons, these two teams would combine to win six Super Bowls between them. They met many times, including five times in the postseason. Of those five meetings, the winner went on to win the Super Bowl four times.

The final meeting between these two teams in this era came following the 1990-91 season, when the two teams met in the NFC Championship Game, with the winner going on to play the Buffalo Bills in the Super Bowl the following weekend. San Francisco was aiming for a third straight Super Bowl title, and a fifth overall since their first title in 1981. The Giants had enjoyed a very successful season, yet entered that game as fairly heavy underdogs. After all, they had lost the highly anticipated regular season game just a month and a half before. But they corrected those mistakes, and the game wound up being very well played by both teams. It was a very tight contest, but in the end, the Giants just edged San Francisco, effectively ending the dynasty that had earned “Team of the Decade” honors with four titles in the eighties.

Since then, the two teams have met in three other postseason contests. That included one of the biggest comeback wins in playoff history by the 49ers in the 2002-03 season, and another tight NFC title game win by the Giants in the 2011-12 season, when they ended up winning the Super Bowl again.

Eight playoff meetings between these two teams since 1981. Only one other rivalry can boast that during that stretch, and it would be the Packers and the 49ers. Much like the Giants and 49ers rivalry, the two teams are split. But there is one major, glaringly obvious difference. While the winner of the playoff meeting between the Giants and 49ers went on to win the Super Bowl five times after the meeting, only once did the winner of the 49ers and Packers playoff rivalry go on to win the Super Bowl.

So, indeed, you can see that this rivalry was very serious and intense. I personally still feel that the NFC Championship Game in January of 1991 was the very best NFL game that I have ever seen, before or since. Some things were just part of that time and perhaps a bit of luck. The fact that those two teams met in that particular season, that the sun was shining brightly, making it feel a bit like an early Super Bowl of sorts. The game had what likely was the best broadcasting duo in the NFL, with Pat Summerall and John Madden. But beyond that, it was just so incredibly intense and well-played, becoming almost like the NFL equivalent to a chess match. It was also an incredibly intense and physical game. And despite being low-scoring, it was a very exciting game from beginning to end. Who knew that, as a Giants fan, my favorite game would be one where Big Blue did not even score a touchdown? But they did not manage to get into the end zone, instead relying on the leg of Matt Bahr, who kicked his final of five field goals as time expired, lifting the Giants past the 49ers and into Super Bowl XXV in Tampa.

In recent seasons, this rivalry has not been nearly as huge, although it has been entertaining often times. Just two seasons ago, the Giants managed to squeak by the 49ers on a Monday Night Football game, with Eli Manning enjoying a solid game. And in 2015, the two teams were engaged in a very exciting Sunday Night Football game, with the Giants just scraping past a tough 49ers team for a last minute comeback win.

Right now, the 49ers are, once again, a very tough and competitive team. They almost won the Super Bowl in February, and entered this season ranked among the favorites to get back to the Super Bowl. Meanwhile, the Giants have suffered through some horrible and humbling seasons in recent years. An 0-2 start to this season, coupled with the loss of Saquon Barkley, has done nothing to help people feel better about the Giants chances to recover and enjoy success this season.

Yet, the Giants might have a better chance than they otherwise would normally have, as the 49ers suffered some serious injuries. It remains uncertain whether quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will start, and tight end George Kittle will likely be out, as well. Running backs Tevin Coleman and Raheem Mostert are questionable, and it is not certain if either may play or not. On defense, the Niners have lost some real talent as well, with Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas both being out for the duration of the season with torn ACL’s. Richard Sherman and D.J. Jones are also on the injured reserve list.

Still, the 49ers enter the game as favorites, although they are also frustrated, due to the injuries. A promising season two years ago fell apart for them due to the number of injuries.

So, it is possible that the Giants could benefit from the misfortune of the 49ers. Certainly, the Giants are hardly one of the elite teams in the league right now, but they could possibly pull off a surprise against the 49ers, if the injuries prove to take their toll on the Niners. Then again, the Giants have their own injuries to overcome, and they have hardly managed to put together a solid enough game to actually win even once yet this season. So it remains an open question at the moment.

I already officially predicted that the 49ers would win. But I will tell you something: I actually hope that my own prediction is wrong.

Go Giants!

🏈 NFL 2020 Week 3 Preview 🏈

🏈🏈🏈🏈

San Francisco at NY Giants – Well, the 49ers are the better overall team, and the Giants, I think, are better than what their record has been in recent seasons, including this one (they are currently 0-2). But both teams suffered serious losses due to injuries, and are not at full strength. That could be an equalizer, albeit an unfortunate one. If the Giants are capable of pulling off this upset, it just might be when San Francisco is not at full strength, like they are not now. Despite having lost their first couple of games, the G-Men have not exactly played poorly. They were competitive against both the Steelers and the Bears, and should be capable of putting on a good performance again. Then again, however, the 49ers are a very talented team themselves. Yes, they have injuries, but they are still probably overall a better team, and that seems to me to be the reason it would be hard to predict against them. As a Giants fan, I hope that Big Blue can pull this one off. As a realist, however, trying to make predictions, I figure the Niners should take it. My prediction: San Francisco

Chicago at Atlanta – The bad luck and bad vibes keep hitting this Atlanta Falcons team sees them heading back home to Atlanta, but to face the Chicago Bears, who are off to a hot start, having earned two solid wins. The Bears have a tough defense, and a potentially explosive offense, and the Falcons, who are a very talented team in fact, will have a difficult time winning. They could do it, because again, the talent definitely is there. But everything is going wrong for them right now. The Cowboys effectively handed them opportunity after opportunity, and to their credit, the Falcons were able to take a 20 point lead. But then, another collapse, one that may haunt this team, because it was so eerily reminiscent to the much bigger, and much more infamous, collapse in the Super Bowl. That is very hard to recover from, as is an 0-2 start to the season. Now, Atlanta has both, and they are again facing a quality team. Very tough. Either the Falcons pull together and rally to win, or they make tons of mistakes and find themselves losing yet again, and their season basically come to a de facto premature end of the season after only the third game. It could go either way, but in the end, momentum goes far, and the Bears have the better momentum. That should be enough for this game. My pick: Chicago

Washington at Cleveland – Washington had an impressive, come from behind win against the Eagles to open the new season, but they suffered a loss in Arizona to follow that up last weekend. This week, they visit Cleveland, who recovered from a blowout loss against the Ravens to start the season with a solid win in a shootout against the Bengals last weekend. I predicted that the Browns would be a solid team, with a chance at least of reaching the playoffs. This may or may not happen. However, the Browns offense was really clicking last weekend, with Baker Mayfield finally showing the kinds of fireworks which we expected from him for years now. He enjoyed a banner day, and it seems that they should be able to take advantage of Washington in this game to follow up. The Browns are in a tough division, with the Ravens and the Steelers. Absolutely brutal. So they will need to win every winnable game on their schedule, and they know it. This one is within their reach, and it should be a victory for the Browns. My pick: Cleveland

Cincinnati at Philadelphia - Two 0-2 teams from different conferences square off in this game. The Bengals have played a bit better than I expected them to, despite their 0-2 mark on the season. But the Eagles figured to be a serious playoff contending team this season, and so this 0-2 start to the year has been very disappointing. However, they should be the better team in this game, and surely are feeling the pressure to win their first game of the season. This is their best chance so far this season, and I figure that they really should be able to get things going enough on both offense and defense to win this one fairly comfortably and convincingly. My pick: Philadelphia

Tennessee at Minnesota – These two teams have had polar opposite beginnings to their seasons thus far. While both teams are coming off strong seasons where they looked impressive in the playoffs last year, they have gone in different directions to this point in the young season. The Titans look like they picked up where they left off, with two impressive divisional wins, while the Vikings have dropped both of their first two games, and bore little resemblance to the legitimate contender of a team that they appeared to be last season. However, I am going to take a chance with this game, an upset special if you will, and predict that the Vikings, feeling an urgency to finally win and get some kind of handle on a season that surely feels like it is slipping away, will hand the unbeaten Titans their first loss of the season. With two 2-0 teams in their own division (and with the Vikings having already lost to both of them), they already have little margin for error, if they want to stay in the playoff race, let alone the division race. My pick: Minnesota

Las Vegas at New England - A big game for both teams here. The Raiders are 2-0, and would love to beat the Patriots in the tough road environment of Foxboro. It is not November or December, so inhospitable weather should not be a decisive factor against them. Las Vegas has looked very good thus far, producing two solid wins at Carolina, and then a big win against the Saints on Monday night last week. But they have to go on the road and face a New England team that is not seemingly as bad as many people had projected them to be. Perhaps many people were hoping that they would not be too good, and so far, maybe this was just wishful thinking, because the Pats still look pretty decent. They convincingly knocked off the Fins in week one, and then barely lost in Seattle last Sunday night. Foxboro is still likely not an easy place for road teams to play, and Belichick is still coaching. That is why I have to go with the home team for this one. My pick: New England

Houston at Pittsburgh - The Texans are not having an easy go of it to start the year. They had to go to Kansas City to open up this season, and not surprisingly, they lost. Then, they lost to the Ravens, which also was not surprising. Possibly the two best teams in the league just to open up the season? The good news is that it likely cannot get tougher. But the bad news is that playing in Pittsburgh is not particularly easy, either. The Steelers might not have the explosive offense that they did some years ago now, and this is not the Steel Curtain defense. Yet, they are undefeated for a reason, and it is because they are a good, solid team, and hard to beat. That is especially true in the Steel City, and it feels like this will be too tough of a test for the Texans, who are still looking for their first win of the season. My pick: Pittsburgh

LA Rams at Buffalo – Another big game this week between two undefeated teams. Yet, they are in different conferences, and neither is overly familiar with the other. The Rams have surprised many people with a hot start, beating up on two NFC East teams, the Cowboys and the Eagles. But Buffalo should easily be their toughest test to date, and they have to travel all across the country to play this game. Not easy. And the Bills have a tough defense, while they also appear to have an explosive offense. My suspicion is that this should be enough for the Bills to take advantage of playing this on their home field, and get a win. My pick: Buffalo  Houston at Pittsburgh –  Cincinnati at Philadelphia -

NY Jets at Indianapolis – Wow. The Jets are obviously struggling, with an 0-2 record. They were beaten convincingly in Buffalo, and got blown out at home against San Francisco. Now, they go to Indianapolis, and it will be a tough test. Frankly, too tough. The Colts lost in week one to Jax, and that probably woke them up. They won last weekend, beating the Vikings, who feel like a better, more solid team than the Jets. This does not bode well for Gang Green, who obviously want to avoid that 0-3 start. But this is too tough, and I just cannot see any reason or compelling evidence for why this would be the game when the Jets suddenly right the ship and get their season going. The Colts are a decent team, and they were my pick to win the AFC South. Not sure if the Titans are as good as they appear at the moment, but I still feel the Colts are legitimate playoff contenders, and they will show why on Sunday against a much weaker Jets team that feels on the edge of the abyss (yet again). Everything feels like it is falling apart for the Jets right now, and it is just hard to see how they could manage to beat the Colts in this one. My pick: Indy

Detroit at Arizona – Wow. Like with the Giants and Jets and Dolphins and Falcons, the bad luck just keeps piling up on the Lions. They appear to have some talent, and capable of winning games. But man, they also just keep finding new ways to lose. And after an 0-2 start, they now head west to Arizona, to take on a young and fired up Cardinals team that looks red hot at the moment. It is not impossible that Detroit comes out fired up and gives themselves a chance. Indeed, they took sizable leads against both Chicago and Green Bay in their first two games. But the Cardinals appear to have a ton of positive momentum, while the Lions have lost 11 straight games dating back to last season. Sure, on any given Sunday, anything can happen. It would not precisely be shocking for the Lions to pull off a win here, because again, there is some talent there. Yet, I just cannot bring myself to think that them winning is that realistic, because it just feels like their season is already in free fall. My pick: Arizona

Carolina at LA Chargers – The Chargers earned a win on the first weekend, and then played the defending champs tough last week, albeit in an ultimately losing cause. They look good, and want to earn their first win on their new home field. In come the Carolina Panthers, who are 0-2, and look like one of the teams destined to struggle and endure a long season this year. Perhaps the Panthers may find a way to win this one, but the Chargers just feel like the better team, and enjoying home field advantage, this should be a win. My pick: LA Chargers

Tampa Bay at Denver – Tom Brady and the Bucs head off to the Mile High City, where the Broncos, despite a rough 0-2 start, feel good about the direction the club is going in. Yes, they have lost both of their opening games thus far, but they played two fairly elite teams, and played both of them well. Now, they host the Buccaneers, an unproven team that figures to stretch the Denver defense a bit in this one. This is a tough game to call, and it could go either way. It will not be a shock no matter who wins. But in the end, Tom Brady always seems to struggle in Denver, and my guess is that this game will prove a bit too tough for Tampa Bay, as the Broncos notch their first win of the young season. My pick: Denver

Dallas at Seattle – The Cowboys just pulled off a huge win. If they enjoy a championship season, they might go back to that comeback win against the Falcons as the moment when their season took off. Then again, the Seahawks are red hot as well, and earned a very exciting win against a tough opponent in the New England Patriots. So, that makes this game very intriguing, perhaps second only to the Chiefs and Ravens on Monday Night in terms of excitement and anticipation, although there is also the game between the Packers and the Saints. But the question is whether the Cowboys can follow up that spectacular win against the Falcons and win in a very tough road environment in Seattle. If the ‘Boys seriously want a championship season, they probably would need to prove themselves in tough games like this. Yet, I expect that the Seahawks, with a tough defense, a ton of momentum, and home field advantage, should manage another win to stay unbeaten. My pick: Seattle

Sunday Night Football: Green Bay at New Orleans – Yet another huge game with likely big playoff ramifications somewhere down the line. Most people expect these teams to be serious playoff contenders, if not title contenders. Last year, these teams did not meet, and the Packers won the tiebreaker when they both finished the season with identical 13-3 marks, earning the second seed. So far, Green Bay has the most explosive offense in the league after two games, and you would have to figure that there will be plenty of scoring by both teams in this game, which will likely be a shootout. The Saints just lost a tough game last weekend, and will feel an urgency to rebound with a win, which I expect them to do, by just edging out the Packers, probably securing the victory late in the fourth quarter. My pick: New Orleans

Monday Night Football: Kansas City at Baltimore – Now, this is the game of the week, at least heading in. These figured to be two of the colossal teams in the league this year, and so far, they have lived up to their billing. They were the top two teams in the AFC in last year’s regular season, and figure to be among the elites and legitimate title contenders this season, as well. The Chiefs not only won the Super Bowl last season, but indeed have won 11 straight games, dating back to midseason last year, including their magical postseason run. Meanwhile, the Ravens have looked just absolutely phenomenal, playing lights out football. They have blown out both of their first two opponents thus far, and have won now fourteen straight regular season games, dating back to last season (they lost the playoff game that they played), and once again, appear to be blowing out their opponents this season, much as they did last season. The Chiefs have their famous explosive offense, led by the still young Patrick Mahomes, who looks like one of the all time greats. Their defense also seems to have stepped up quite a bit, and Andy Reid is obviously an excellent coach. The Ravens have a solid defense, and an explosive offense with probably the best running game in the league, and a young quarterback who can kill opponents with either his arm or his legs. These two teams are playing each other seemingly at the height of their powers, which makes this an enormous game, perhaps one of the most highly anticipated Monday Night Football games in a very long time. These were the top two seeds in last year’s AFC playoffs, so even though this is only Week 3, it is not impossible that this may have some serious impact on who gets home field advantage this season. I expect an explosive game with a lot of offensive highlights for both teams, and one that goes down to the fourth quarter. As for predictions? Well,  home field should help the Ravens, although how much? The crowd will be non-existent, and the artificial fan noise is not necessarily going to be enough. Still, I like the Ravens to likely pull this one off. It could go either way, and the absence of a major crowd in Baltimore might negate some of the home field advantage that they would normally have. Man, this game is exciting, as they are both still unbeaten and looking great. Yet in the end, I expect the Ravens to edge the Chiefs at the end of the game. My pick: Baltimore

🏈 NFL 2020 Thursday Night Football Review: Fins Pound Jaguars 🏈

🏈🏈🏈🏈

Miami 31, Jacksonville 13 – Well, this was a surprise. I had expected the Jaguars to win, because they looked like the better team, by my estimation, so far this season. Plus, this game was in Jacksonville, which gave them an extra advantage. But it turns out the Jaguars actually got pounded by Miami. Ryan Fitzpatrick had one of those incredible games that he is capable of producing every now and again, and the Jaguars just had no answers. The Dolphins just found a rhythm offensively, and the Jaguars could not stop them on defense, nor keep up with them on offense, either. Not a good combination. Perhaps I overestimated how good the Jaguars had looked earlier this season, and underestimated the Fins, who are supposed to be an improved team. At the very least, now the pressure of winning that first game is now over for Miami and, in fact, they have plenty of time to rest before their next game, which will be a tough one as they host the Seahawks. As for the Jaguars, this is obviously a very disappointing result, but the season is still young, and they will have an opportunity to recover in their next game when they travel to Cincinnati. That should be a winnable game. But the Dolphins looked very good last night, to their credit. It was the kind of game that many people felt that this improved team was capable of playing. Well done on their part. My prediction: Inaccurate

My Grandfather's Birthday

Today would have been the birthday of my grandfather on my mother's side of the family. He would have been 112.

He was a great man, in his quiet way. He taught me chess and encouraged me appreciate his stamp collection,  which helped to pique my curiosity of history and the various cultures of the world.  He also had an impressive personal library,  and that before the age of the internet,  when obtaining such things was much more difficult and expensive.

Finally,  he also got me into NFL football. However, he and my brother proved to be fans of the Jets, while I leaned more towards the Giants. Never hated the Jets (never saw the point of hating them), and consider them my second favorite team. But some of the earliest games that I remember watching were with my grandfather, particularly a game between the Giants and Jets, and another between the Giants and Eagles.

There are things, generally subtle things, that sometimes instantly remind you of someone who had a profound impact on you. For me, the distinctive scent of the tobacco from his pipe, which was Borkum Riff whiskey. In fact, I just took a pause from writing this to get the also distinctive tin that I obtained some years ago, and where I keep a small pouch of the stuff that I also got some years ago, while on a trip to Massachusetts (I believe it was at Plymouth). Often, he would smoke that while playing a quiet game of chess, both of which would be one of those things for which I best remember him. The first chess matches that I ever played were against him. He would tend to whistle softly, almost without the whistling. Just kind of airy tunes that you could never make out. Unfortunately, he as not all that good, and lost more often - even far more often - than he won. Yet, here was another lesson that he taught me: he was a good sport, and simply accepted the results. The game was never really more than a game with him.

After all of these years, I still think about him fairly often. He was one of the most calming influences of my own childhood, and always good natured and gentle. Again, in his quiet way, he lived a life that felt like something to strive for. His personal library was not for show. He actually was a learned man, and could discuss many things intelligently, in an informed and capable manner. I believe that my own intellectual curiosity, something that has stretched well beyond my own childhood now, may have begun due to his influence. His field of expertise was biology, but his books were not limited to just that field. I remember perusing his library years after his death in 1989, and being surprised by the range of the books. There were some books by Kurt Vonnegut in there, who by then had become one of my own favorite authors. And again, the stamp collection meant a lot to me. It was almost like capturing a miniature collection of fine art and history within the binders of a given stamp album. Looking at those pages, you almost felt like you were literally getting a taste of the world, seeing what each individual country valued the most, glimpsing important events, seeing how they saw themselves. I still have maintained a stamp collection to this day, but it began with him.

Some Digitized Pictures Unearthed - Cincinnati, Leadership Weekend, Quebec 2008 Philadelphia Pictures Birth

I found these pictures saved online recently, and thought that I should probably post them here online, with a blog page.

So, here they are.

The first batch are of my son, many of them during a trip up to Quebec City, I think around 2008. My son was still very, very young at the time, not even three years old yet. There is another couple of pictures from Christmas, either in 2007 or 2008. And, of course, one of my very favorite pictures of me holding my newborn son on the day when he was born.

After that bunch of pictures, there are pictures from Cincinnati and Philadelphia (they were mixed up together for some reason), and below that, pictures of my participation in Leadership Weekend for Bergen Community College back in October of 1994, in Warwick, New York, which was right next to my hometown of West Milford, New Jersey. I was the one in the white and blue Quebec hoodie, and what appears to be blue sweatpants. These pictures I may or may not have already published, but the ones with my son in Quebec, as well as the Cincinnati and Philadelphia pictures, I think, have not yet been published, until today.
