Sometimes, it is difficult not to look around at what is happening in the world, and in this country in particular, and just shake your head at the astonishing, jaw-dropping levels of stupidity that dominate this world. Look at who is in the Oval Office right now, just as one example. Look at the most popular or trending television shows that people seem to be watching and talking about. Look at how people treat one another, or even their own world in general, which is polluted to astonishing levels.
It is more than a little alarming, and sometimes, it feels that we are collectively comfortably asleep. Many people seem almost to have violent reactions whenever others try to wake them out of their overly comfortable reveries. And this, in turn, has contributed still further to this world being worse for us all.
One of the most disappointing things to see and hear, although one of the most common forms of stupidity, or naivete, would be people who subscribe to literal interpretations of Holy Books. Usually, this would be the Bible, but there are plenty of people who believe literal interpretations of the Koran or the Torah, as well.
Unfortunately, many of these people have infiltrated the political world. Here in the United States, a nation that seemingly used to be a part of an advanced, relatively enlightened, civilized world, these kinds of politicians are absolutely everywhere. Some of the most maddening examples are those who, when taken to task, cannot even recite the Ten Commandments, even when they champion those same Ten Commandments being on prominent public display.
Some of the most extreme cases are politicians who have gained a national following, or who hold prominent offices. One of them is Michele Bachmann, a former Congresswoman from Minnesota. You might remember her. She was quite extremist in her ultra conservative views, and tended to say and do things that astonished people with their levels of stupidity. She also ran for the White House once, but her candidacy sank in a hurry. She was never a serious factor, although you almost wonder why, given the low standards promoted by her Republican Party. She fits right in, frankly.
Well, she is at it again.
What did she do now?
Not surprisingly, she is championing Donald Trump for another four years in the White House. No surprise there, right?
But she is going a bit farther than most pro-Trump people have, as amazing as that seems. Yes, she is suggesting that the Bible warned about all of the things that she finds threatening in this country, including Antifa (a terrorist organization that, in fact, does not exist in reality), Black Lives Matter (BLM) and those she called “transgender Marxists” who are intent on destroying traditional families in America.
Hard to have any kind of a conversation about greater social or political equality or fairness when someone like Bachmann paints everyone even remotely involved with these things as purely evil. I myself have had conversations with pro-Trump types, who also seem to view BLM in particular with astonishing levels of fear, suspicion, and hatred.
To illustrate this truly mind-boggling level of narrow-mindedness, take a look at what Bachmann recently said, in her own words:
“Antifa is, if you go to their website, their materials, they are directly traceable to the Communist Party because their goal is the overthrow of the United States government and to bring communism into America,” Bachmann said in a video clip flagged by Right Wing Watch. “Just like Black Lives Matter, this is not a new movement either. On their website, these are transgender Marxists, transgender Black Marxists who are seeking the overthrow the United States and the dissolution of the traditional family.”
“For people who know their Bible, this is exactly what the prophets told us,” she later added. “So, we stand on the word of God, the Bible, and we say, ‘Satan, flee, we’re going to stand on the truth of God.’ And so that’s why now more than ever, between now and the election, what we need to do is pray and cry out to Almighty God and ask for his protection over America and to speak in this election.”
And then many Americans wonder or act surprised when literally, the rest of the world views Americans as out of touch or immature politically?
Incredibly depressing.
