Kansas City Chiefs 34, Houston Texans 20
The NFL's new season has now officially kicked off. Are you ready for some football?
First, there was something that happened that went beyond football. It happened about half an hour before the game actually started. I used an ESPN article from the Associated Press in writing this piece (see link below), and so here is how the scene was described in that article:
The Chiefs lined up along the goal line about 30 minutes before kickoff and watched Alicia Keyes perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing," which is often considered the Black national anthem, in a video designed to address racial inequality.
The Texans had already left the field when the demonstration occurred. They remained there until R&B duo Chloe x Halle finished a virtual performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner," then ran onto the field to a chorus of boos from fans.
After that, it was game time.
Predictably, the Chiefs offense was deadly, particularly with 2018 NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes, who also earned the Super Bowl MVP award in February for his performance in that game. Mahomes threw for 211 yards and three touchdowns.
Nor did Mahomes have to do it alone. Clyde Edwards-Helaire pounded out 138 yards on the ground, providing the dangerous Chiefs offense with the double threat of a lethal passing attack and a punishing ground game.
It was in the second quarter when the Chiefs really got going. They overcame an early 7-0 Houston lead and enjoyed a 17-0 run in the second quarter to take command of the game. Another touchdown in the second allowed KC to establish more or less complete control of the contest. A Mahomes pass to Tyreek Hill early in the final quarter put the game out of reach for Houston, giving KC a decisive 31-7 lead.
This was the 10th straight win for the Chiefs, dating back to when they began their winning streak last year. After falling to 6-4, the Chiefs ran the tables the rest of the way, winning their final six regular season games and just squeaking past their former longtime tormentors, the New England Patriots, for the second seed and the playoff bye. Then, they knocked off these same Houston Texans in the divisional round, the Tennessee Titans in the championship game, and finally, outlasting the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl.
The Chiefs will next visit the Chargers in Los Angeles, while the Texans will host the Ravens, in what feels like a brutal start for Houston.
My pick: Accurate
