The whole Aaron Rodgers move to the New York Jets has been a really long, drawn out process. At times it seems almost certain to happen soon, and at other times, it looks like it just will never actually come to fruition.
As I write this now, during the final weekend of March, there still is no deal. Rodgers has already said that he wants to go to the Jets. Also, it sure seems like the Jets want him. But evidently, there are a whole lot of wrinkles to iron out first.
For now, it remains an uncertainty, yet it still is a distinct possibility. To be sure, I have mixed emotions about it. It just reminds me too much of other failed experiments that the Jets have had with high profile quarterbacks which wound up not only not working out for the best, but which too often wound up being a source of embarrassment to Gang Green. At times, these high-profile acquisitions seemed to be going well. But in the end, they never seem to work out like the architects of these deals want them to. Think back to Boomer Esiason, who never took the Jets to the playoffs. Or Neil O'Donnell. Or Brett Favre. Or Michael Vick.
And those are just the quarterbacks!
One who worked out quite well was Vinny Testaverde. True, he never got Gang Green to the promised land of the Super Bowl, but he came closer than any Jets quarterback since Joe Namath outright won it for them.
Still, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe the Aaron Rodgers deal will go through, and perhaps it will even work out for the best. At his best, Rodgers certainly has the kind of talent to lead a team to the Super Bowl. He already earned a Super Bowl ring with the Packers, and took them to a whole bunch of NFC Championship Games, where there were knocking on the door. Does he have one or two really good seasons left in him?
Time will tell.
Meanwhile, playing a bit on Rodgers and his conspiracy theories, I thought this recent headline from The Onion was actually quite humorous.
Enjoy!
