The NFL Draft has been taking place in the past few days, and it is making a lot of noise. Not sure that I ever really closely followed the draft religiously, like some people do. However, a lot of the other guys working this special event here in Beverly Hills have been talking about it. So while I will not elaborate much on the drafts for each team, I will post this blog entry related to NFL football.
Tom Brady recently shared his belief that Josh Allen will be the next "new" quarterback to finally win a Super Bowl.
That certainly would be good news for the Buffalo Bills if he does, always assume that the unthinkable - like Allen somehow leaving the Bills franchise - does not happen if and when he finally does lead a team to a Super Bowl title.
Many are hailing this as a bold prediction, which it is. That said, Allen has ranked among the elite quarterbacks in recent years. Also, it feels like the Buffalo Bills, despite numerous setbacks and heartbreaks, not only have been a solid enough team to be right in the title hunt in recent seasons, but are also still good enough to be a serious championship contender for coming seasons, as well. So long as they have Allen, they likely should be good.
However, the current edition of the Buffalo Bills will have to overcome some of their recent failures, which have unfortunately kind of come to define the franchise in a similar way to how the Bills were defined in the early nineties by repeatedly getting to, but ultimately losing, the Super Bowl. In particular, the Bills will likely have to find a way past the Kansas City Chiefs, who have kind of tormented Buffalo in recent years. Dating back to the 2020 season, the two franchises have met a whole bunch of times, including in three postseason meetings. And while the Bills have managed some impressive wins over the Chiefs, they lost all three of the playoff meetings against Kansas City. The last two, which have come to be known as the "13 Seconds" and "Wide Right 2," have been especially heartbreaking.
One thing that works in Buffalo's favor: no team in NFL history has managed to win three Super Bowls n a row. And while the Chiefs seemed to confidently boast that they would win a third one next season, other teams have seemed to feel the same way and fallen short. The 1989 San Francisco 49ers started to hold up three fingers, indicating a "three-peat," before the Super Bowl against the Denver Broncos was even over. And they came the closest of any of the franchises, as the 1990 49ers raced off to a 10-0 start, finished the season with a league best 14-2 record and the number one overall seed in the NFC, and not only hosted the NFC Championship Game, but were leading until the game's final play, before Matt Bahr's field goal ended that Niner dynasty. A few years later, the Dallas Cowboys seemed well positioned to get a three-peat, but then Jimmy Johnson stepped down, and the 49ers loaded up on talent specifically to counter the dominance of the Cowboys in the two years prior. The two teams met in the NFC Championship, and Dallas fell behind badly early on. They mounted a comeback, but ultimately fell short.
So despite what Chiefs player might say, winning a third straight Super Bowl - or even getting back to a third straight - is not a given. Indeed, only three franchises in NFL history have even made it to three straight Super Bowls. Those were the Miami Dolphins of the early 1970's, the Buffalo Bills in the 1990's, and the New England Patriots in the late 2010's. The Fins and Pats both went 2-1, respectively, while the Bills unfortunately were unable to win even one Super Bowl.
