50 Years Ago Today, Stephen King's First Novel, "Carrie," Was Published

Stephen King is one of the most prolific authors of our times, if not ever. I know that Isaac Asimov actually published more - even far more, at over 200, if memory serves correctly - but King has not done that bad himself. He had well over 60 books published, and that does not include some ideas independent of books, such as made for television movies like "Storm of the Century," which happens to be one of my personal favorites.

So while "Carrie" was the first published novel by King, there have obviously been many, many more since. In fact, King is still going strong, with a new book of short stories. His writing style has changed, and his more recent books have a very different feel. Yet, I rather enjoy that, and feel that you can see his progression as a writer.

Obviously, he has enjoyed tremendous success, being one of the most famous authors around today, with an international audience. It is quite possible that he may be the most well-known author alive today, in fact.

Amazing to think, then, that it all started on this day half a century ago, when he got his first novel, "Carrie," published. What a long, amazing trip it has been. There were ups and downs for him, obviously. But he has clearly remained dedicated to the gift of writing that he was blessed with. And we, the Constant Readers, have been truly blessed to have had his books to read through it all.

Below are a couple of links related to the 50th anniversary of Stephen King's first published novel coming out on this day in 1974:
