New York/New Jersey Region May Have Solid Views of Upcoming Solar Eclipse

On this day, we here in North America will be extended a rare privilege.

There will be a solar eclipse. Some regions of North America will be in what has been referred to as the "path of totality."

For quite some time, it seemed that we in the greater New York/New Jersey region would miss the best of this coming eclipse, much like we did in 2017.

Somehow, though, things have changed a bit. While we are not quite in what is called the “path of totality,” we are apparently decently close to it, which is a good thing. It now appears that we here in New Jersey will have a shot at actually getting a good view of the solar eclipse. I could not have asked for more, under the circumstances.

Granted, we are not in the “path of totality,” as it is called. Still, it seems like we are significantly closer than I had expected us to be, and that is good news. My son and I were together for the last eclipse in 2017, and I fully intend to share this experience with him, as well. In fact, I believe that his high school will be letting school out early so that the students can watch it. I hope that he and I can do that much together.

One thing that I made a point of obtaining last time were viewing glasses. I believe that I still know where they are (in a Stephen Hawking book, because that seemed fitting). And I think that I have two of them, although even if we have only one, it should be enough for us to share it and get decent views, hopefully.

Obviously, this has been a highly anticipated event for a lot of people. Tens of millions of people are in line with the so-called “path of totality,” so this should be a memorable experience for many millions of people across the North American continent.

You know that we are going to try and get the best viewing possible here on our end. I will try to make sure that we make the most of it.

Here’s wishing everyone the best of luck in having a very good and memorable experience in viewing this eclipse later today!

As I understand it, the eclipse will begin in this area (New Jersey) at approximately 2:09 to 2:10, and will reach it's peak sometimes between 3:24 to 3:25 or so, and will end at 4:35. The weather calls for clouds to move in in the afternoon, so the best chance to get the best views of the solar eclipse will be early on, at least locally. Check your local times and weather conditions, however, because they likely differ than what we will have here.

Enjoy!
