Remembering the Fire & Honoring Notre-Dame Cathedral - Paris’s Cathedral of Imagination & Memory

This is the only picture that I know of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris with me pictured along with it from way back. It was taken a while ago, as evidenced by  my hair. I believe that this was taken back in 1998, but it may also have been in 2000. Sitting on a bridge near the Île de la Cité, with the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris in the background — in Paris, France.

Yesterday marked five years since the horrible fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. It was tragic to watch, and I will admit to suspecting that it might have been a terrorist attack at the time. But it was not, being the product evidently of some carelessness on the part of workers there.

In any case, it made me get serious about finally doing something which I had intended to do for years: take my son to see Paris. I had been waiting until he was old enough, and by then, he was 13 years old, which I figured might be old enough for him to appreciate it. But any remaining doubts were gone after that fire, and I booked a trip to Europe shortly thereafter.

So a sad occasion finally got me to commit to doing something which I had long intended to do. My son has been to Paris and seen most of the most famous sites there, including an outdoor close-up visit to Notre-Dame. It was not the visit to the beautiful and historically rich cathedral which I had long imagined, but at least he did get to see it.

Hopefully someday, he will get to see it not just close up, but actually get to be inside. I went inside of the cathedral, a few times, even. Yet, I was too young to truly appreciate it, including the history of it. Also, I had systematically assumed that it would always be there to visit, not knowing then that, in fact, things often are more delicate than we initially imagine them to be.

It seemed to me appropriate now to publish a blog entry honoring Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, including some pictures to remember it by. Also, I am adding some interesting articles, some of which were informative and well-written. This includes an unconventional article about one person's memories of the recently ravaged Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.
