As of right now, one single Republican - Don Bacon (R-Neb.) -had admitted that far from being a success, as portrayed by Trump and fellow GOP bootlickers, the White House meeting with Ukrainian President Zelensky was bad for American foreign policy.
Normally, one Republican's opinion should not necessarily make major headlines. But in this Trump era, when a single Republican Congressman actually says anything that may sound remotely critical of Dear Leader, it feels like something worth noting, even celebrating. At least one Congressman has perhaps not fully consumed the Kool Aid which the rest of MAGA Nation has clearly not hesitated to drink.
Up until this article about Bacon criticizing how the meeting went, all I had heard from GOP/Trump Party members was unconditional support and praise for what was frankly, quite clearly, a diplomatic disaster. One which the entire world saw and will judge.
Here is what Bacon said, to his credit, according to an article by Filip Timotija on The Hill (see link below):
“A bad day for America’s foreign policy. Ukraine wants independence, free markets and rule of law. It wants to be part of the West. Russia hates us and our Western values. We should be clear that we stand for freedom,” Bacon said in a Friday text message to The Hill.
So that's something, I guess. Perhaps I'm wrong, but this feels like the first time that a Republican has come out publicly being critical of Trump since his second term began.
Let's hope that there will be plenty more. Let's see.
