Again Trump Lashes Out on Friendly Nations With 25% Tariffs on Automobiles

This is a picture of a magnet that was being sold at Strand's Book Store in New York City a few years ago. No, I did not buy it, but I liked it and took a picture, which I am sharing here now.

Trump is now targeting numerous friendly (or at least previously friendly)_ nations with still more tariffs. This tariff will impose a systematic and apparently permanent 25% tariff on foreign cars. That means that some of the biggest exporters of cars, including Japan, South Korea, and the European Union are being hit with his tariffs. He will impose a 25% tariff on vehicles being imported from other countries..

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney believes that Trump's auto import tariff is a “direct attack” on his country. He suggested that this trade war initiate by Trump is affecting Americans, and said that American consumer confidence is on the decline for the long term. He went on to say:

“We will defend our workers. We will defend our companies. We will defend our country. Canada will be there for auto workers. He (Trump) wants to break us so America can own us. And it will never ever happen because we just don’t look out for ourselves; we look out for each other. The relationship between Canada and the United States has changed. We did not change it.”

Meanwhile, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said that they are considering what he called "appropriate measures" in response to these latest Trump tariffs.

Leaders in South Korea and the European Union also reinforced their commitment to their home companies and the workers of the automotive industries.

Seems like the trade war is really beginning to escalate, particularly between the United States and allied (or again, perhaps formerly allied) nations.

I am going to predict something here. My guess is that soon, American movies and music - the massive American entertainment industry - will soon be targeted by nations which will try and get their own entertainment industry going for their own countries, in their own languages. And if this does prove to be the case, can you really blame them?

My guess also is that workers - including car dealerships - of foreign automobiles in the United States, from Toyota to Honda and Mazda and Hyundai and Mercedes and Saab and BMW and Volkswagen and others - are going to be hurt by this quite a bit. Not sure how many of them are or were Trump supporters. Again, though, this is what the American people were warned about, and still went ahead and voted for. If it hurts them - and I am sure that some Trump supporters will indeed be hurt by this - then so be it. A lesson learned the hard way.
