Climate Update: Weather Experts Warn To Expect More of These Extreme Heat Waves in Years to Come

  

The old button from the Environmental Club days which I just happened to find on Earth Day! It is a little beat up (particularly the ends of the ribbon), but no worse for the wear, I think. And it is one of the few items that I have left from those days, so it carries a lot of great memories for me! Nothing Changes Until You Do!

We seem to be experiencing extreme heat and record hot temperatures with alarming frequency in recent years. 

As I write this, many Americans from coast to coast have been or will soon be experiencing record heat waves. Here in New Jersey, there were weather forecasts that showed we might hit highs in the triple digits Fahrenheit on two consecutive days this coming week.

Meanwhile, other regions around the world have experienced unusual, record heat waves. Asia uncharacteristically saw a record heat wave in March. India and Pakistan just went through a massive heat wave, which was dangerous for people in those countries. France, Portugal, and Spain experienced a severe heat wave just days after I returned from Europe. Even Greenland and Iceland just saw a very uncharacteristic heat wave, with the hottest temperatures ever recorded established in Iceland.

No, this is not normal. Yes, we should pay attention, and yes, we should be worried.

More than that, we should be taking action.

Instead, many people still want to deny the reality of climate change. We still elect Senators who claim to disprove climate change by bringing in a snowball into the Senate chambers, or who claim that a massive snowstorm or a frigid streak in the winter proves that climate change is some kind of a hoax. Keep in mind that here in the northeastern United States, those types of wintry conditions were once considered the norm. So when we get back to something approaching normal, even if for only a few days, skeptics who, I believe, want to doubt the reality of climate change, probably because it is scary, and also would require some effort to fix, take comfort in denying it and mocking those of us who pay attention to headlines like the ones we have been seeing with alarming regularity in recent weeks. 

Again, there is nothing normal about any of this. 

If you live in the United States and are or will be experiencing record heat - dangerously hot conditions in many cases - please stay cool and don't put yourself in dangerous conditions. Also, please remember all of these unusual things that we are experiencing - not just record heat waves, although I have been focusing on that since climate change deniers always seem to equate global warming/climate change with hot conditions and heat waves.
