🏈 Other Aspects of Super Bowl LIV 🏈

So, the Super Bowl is done. Not sure if it ranks among the truly great Super Bowls, although it was shaping up like it might at one point.

Some people watch the Super Bowl, even though they do not care one little bit for football. Mostly, they watch it because it is an event that goes beyond simply a football game. There is plenty of pageantry and entertainment. Many people who do not care for the Super Bowl will watch the halftime show, or watch because of commercials. Yes, this is real, because I have met such people.

How did this year's Super Bowl match up to ones in the past in this category?

Here is my take on some of the stuff:

Commercials:

Like the game itself, it felt like this year's commercials were really, really lame, until the very end. Now that said, I apparently missed the one with Bryan Cranston doing an ode to "The Shining," and will try and watch it and get back to you guys on that. However, the rest felt really, really lame. Tom Brady ended much speculation about a mysterious tweet when it was revealed that he was simply peddling the product of a company, and not making some mysterious announcement about whether he was staying or going as a Patriot. I was not a fan of the Donald Trump commercials, and in that spirit, when we have elected someone who many feel is a "typical American," I did not like the "Typical American" beer commercial, because it is catering to the self-indulgence and narcissism that we as a country seem to love a little too much.

However, I did really enjoy Bill Murray's "Groundhog Day" commercial. That made me laugh out loud, and it was not lost on me that this Super Bowl was played on Groundhog Day itself. Well done!

Then, the Charlie Day commercials about the stain, which felt mostly annoying at first, finally got to me with the sheer repetition, and the outlandishness of his advanced aging and struggle to get out the stain, only to acquire a new one.

Mostly, though, the commercials felt lame this year otherwise.

Halftime Show:

Well this halftime show was steamy!

Hard to believe that J Lo is 50, and Shakira is 43. They each wore very revealing costumes, and both also danced very provocatively. They look much younger in both cases, and looked very sexy. Also, their ability to dance was amazing, and this was particularly true of Shakira.

One thing that I did not quite pick up on at the time that it was happening was Shakira's seemingly random tongue wiggling was actually culturally important to the Arab community, from which she at least partially came.

Interesting.

An entertaining halftime show overall, even if I saw a few disgruntled women complaining about it on social media afterward.

Others:

I did not bother with the "America the Beautiful" and "National Anthem" performances before the game. Again, I feel that Americans tend to be a little too in love with the idea of patting themselves on the back, and it seems to be getting worse lately, especially with Trump in office.  And the Super Bowl is one of those times when it really, really feels over the top to me.
