NFL 2024-25 Thursday Night Football Week 3 Review: Jets Dominate the Patriots & Look Like Solid Playoff Contenders

NY Jets 24, New England Patriots 3

Maybe Gang Green looked bad in their opening game this season, getting blown out by the 49ers in San Francisco.

Since then, however, they have played extremely well. They went on the road and beat the Titans in Tennessee last weekend. And then this past Thursday in their home opener, they just soundly routed the New England Patriots, who had been their long time tormentors until not that long ago.

The Jets won, 24-3. They were solid on all sides of the ball. The offense looked good, the defense looked great, and the outcome of this game really was never in doubt from about the midpoint of the second quarter on, by which point Gang Green had scored their second touchdown to go up, 14-0.

Overall, the Jets offense produced 400 yards and 27 first downs, while their defense limited the Pats to just 139 total yards and 11 first downs. Gang Green held onto the ball for over 40 minutes, and were solid on third down efficiency, converting 10 of 15. Also, they avoided turnovers.

Aaron Rodgers showed true leadership and had probably his best day with the Jets. He completed 27 of 35 for 281 yards and two touchdowns, which was an exquisite performance by the veteran qb. Tyler Conklin proved to be his favorite target on this evening. Conklin caught 5 passes for 93 yards. On the ground, Braelon Allen added 55 yards on 11 carries.

Just a very solid, very impressive performance by the Jets, who improved to 2-1 on the year. They are in second place in the AFC East right now, behind the 2-0 Bills.

New England quarterback Jacoby Brissett had a very tough day, completing only 12 of 18 passes for 98 yards. Demario Douglas was perhaps the one guy on the Pats who stood out, as he reeled in seven receptions for 69 yards, which was not bad. Yet, it was not nearly enough for New England to making this anything resembling a competitive game. The loss was the second in a row for the Patriots following their opening day win on the road in Cincy. It drops them to 1-2, and in last place in the AFC East.

Really, there was no mystery or drama in this one. It was just pure domination by the Jets from beginning to end. They were solid in all facets of the game. Even their uniforms looked great, as it brought back the Kelly green uniforms that they wore in the late seventies and throughout the eighties, which I grew up with.

Now, the Jets have a mini bye, with three extra days to prepare, before hosting the Denver Broncos on Sunday, September 29th. Really, they have an excellent chance of improving to 3-1, and looking really strong after a month of regular season play. I am not saying that I have suddenly become a believer that this team will get to the Super Bowl, but they look really good so far. It is refreshing to see them playing at such a high level, and I want to enjoy it for now, while it lasts. If they can stay healthy and keep this level of intensity, they can indeed make this a special season.

My pick: Accurate
