Today is the Fiestas Patrias de Chile (Independence Day in Chile)

Today is the national holiday in Chile, recognizing the independence of the country from Spain. It is known as the Fiestas Patrias de Chile.

José Francisco de San Martín y Matorras (best known as José de San Martín) was considered "the Liberator of Argentina, Chile and Peru." While these days largely in the shadows in popular history to Bolivar, San Martin nevertheless was instrumental in helping the countries in the southern half of Spanish South America achieve independence.

This day in 1810 marked the first meeting of the national government of Chile. Hence, it is recognized as Chile's independence day.
