Hard to imagine a country that has produced such great writers and novels as Great Britain, isn't it? There are great writers and works of literature that other countries have produced, of course. But when you think of British literature, with names like Chaucer, Shakespeare, Dickens, Austin, Shelley, the Bronte sisters, Orwell, and so on and so forth - there are just too many to mention, seemingly - you begin to feel that the British have outdone themselves.
Indeed, for a tiny nation with a relatively small population, they hit harder than their weight in some categories. And literature is certainly one of those areas. It has added immeasurably to the prestige of this otherwise tiny nation.
Well, I ran into this link, where the 100 greatest British novels are listed.
Obviously, this would be open to debate. Nothing is set in rock, and it is all open for discussion.
Still, there should be a discussion of British works of literature, because they have contributed so much to it.
