The Reality Behind Trump's Golden Claims

This is a picture of a magnet that was being sold at Strand's Book Store in New York City a few years ago. No, I did not buy it, but I liked it and took a picture, which I am sharing here now.

Remember when Trump claimed, during the Obama years and long before he himself ever ran for the White House, that an American President had to accept total responsibility for everything, whether things were going well or badly?

Yeah.

And remember how, once he actually became president, Trump always seemed to divorce himself from responsibility when things were clearly going wrong? The mishandling of the pandemic was not his fault, and he took no responsibility at all. Or how he has spent the last year and change, ever since assuming the Oval Office for a second time, how anything and everything bad was because of his predecessor, Joe Biden.

Funny, isn't it?

Here's the thing: if you listen to Trump, literally everything good is to his credit, and literally everything bad is not his fault. Any attempts to actually hold him accountable are just smear campaigns by the "fake news." If you listen to him, there is no possible way that he could lose an election - any election. The fact that he lost in 2020, according to him, is because of "massive voter fraud," and he claimed to have "irrefutable proof" of this. Funny, he and his legal team bent over backwards NOT to argue "massive voter fraud" in a single one of the over sixty court cases that he had to challenge the election results in 2020.

If you believe him - and tens of millions of Americans evidently still do - he rightly won every election, and has done nothing but awesome things for the country. Very quickly once he assumed office, America became Great Again, according to him.

Indeed, Trump has an answer for everything. Polls lie. Election results cannot be trusted, particularly if he is losing. Anything that seems to be going wrong is someone else's fault, never his. Even when confronted with the fact that Canadians were angry and had largely stopped traveling to the United States - costing billions of dollars in tourism - he shrugged if off and claimed otherwise. Surely, Canadians could not be mad at him for undermining their sovereignty at every turn and dismissing them simply as the "51st state."

In short, everything which does not conform to his world view - which clearly is centered on himself as the savior figure - is "fake news" or some gigantic "hoax." Bad poll numbers, scientific realities like climate change, a lingering inflation which he has done little to alleviate. All of it is just a smear campaign against him. Hell, some of his supporters claim that the coronavirus pandemic - which was global - was just something artificially constructed to make Trump look bad.

With that said, I saw this a day or two ago, and it rang true. This was done in a campaign poster style, and it feels very much like the truth. With Trump here, you will never get a rest, never get a break from propaganda and lies, lies, lies. Not even sure if he recognizes that there is anything called "the truth" anymore, frankly.
